After his departure from his birth herd, Matteo has spent the last 4 years with other bachelors, all varying in size and age, roughhousing and practicing, becoming stronger for when they get the chance to impress a mare or try to steal one from another stallion. Matteo has since filled out in muscle and experience. Getting your butt kicked by other bachelors was fine because there was always an air of fun in it, but band stallions didn’t joke around and made it clear why they shouldn’t be messed with. He’s learned that he’d rather have a more peaceful encounter with a mare then fight for one, remembering how scared everyone in his family was when a bachelor tried to take them. So, Matteo has made that his strategy.

He's now no stranger to following bands at a distance, hoping to impress or pique the curiosity of one of the stallions mare’s to join him. He’s only met with bites, nip, and kicks, but he keeps his hopes up. Matteo has also gotten into the habit of doing this alone, leaving his bachelor herd to go find a mare on his own, which also leaves out the potential competition he’d have with any bachelor that was with him.

The longest he’s ever been without a herd would be 10 days, never making it longer than that; but he’s reached the prime age and is ready, even a little desperate, to start his own herd and he’ll stick it out alone for as long as he’s able. Mother nature forbid he returns to his regular bachelor herd, and they tease him again for another failure. That sting of embarrassment is one he is all too familiar with and would like to avoid.

Keeping his nose to the ground and in the air to catch a possible scent of a mare and keeping eyes and ear open for anything that would make him believe a mare was nearby.

He now stands, staring out into a snow-covered land, more determined than ever.
