The deep dark blue depth was but a mere background. Her focus was the man, who was rapidly sinking. Sinking faster than she could swim. Giving up was never on her mind!
Faster! Need to go faster! Quickly!
Every push of her paws forced her deeper underwater as her muscles began to burn with an intense pain. With all her attention to the rush and the man below her, gulps of salty water hit her throat every time the strain forced open her mouth.
Quickly now! Need to catch up!
The man sunk ever deeper while the darkness of the abyss slowly engulfed him. She would never let him go, not as long as he is alive. He is alive! He is definitely alive!
Go after him! Quick!
Her body was wearing out, though her mind didn’t accept it. Even when the man finally disappeared out of sight, her eyes remained fixed on her target. More water entered her mouth, and she had no choice but to swallow.
Just… a bit further!
As her body began to falter, so did her vision. Her surroundings had gotten dark. It was hard to tell whether it was because of how deep she had gotten or because of the lack of oxygen. Nothing gave any sense of direction anymore, but for the gentle tug of gravity.
W… where is he? Where… where am I?
The last thing she felt was a vague despair. As she gradually lost consciousness, like a steep descent into a dream, she unknowingly joined her master to eternally rest at the bottom of the ocean. That is, until right after, she was stumbled upon by quite the stranger.
“Well, well! What have we here?” The gigantic Esk took a quick look at the bodies huddled together on the ocean floor. “Hmm. Should I? One is far gone, but the other one...” He shrugged as if considering a most mundane occurrence. “Ah, why not! Let’s have some fun.” He bowed down relatively fast, and for a moment the centre of attention was the tiny dog left in the sand.
As the transformation happened, the dog’s body slowly changed form to become bigger than before. Not only did her appearance change. The stones of the earth, the gabbro rocks found close to her old home, rolled in, seemingly attracted to her like magnets. They attached to her very being, tying her to her old home, and more importantly, to her old master. When she woke the first thing she saw was that very man laying beside her.
Uncertain, she looked around. Makoa witnessed her awakening with great childish interest. When their eyes met, a torrent of water torpedoed him circling around the newly made Esk, like a young excited puppy. All the new Esk could do however, was look and wonder at what she saw.
“Yes! You are awake! Alright, I did you a favour, all you have to do to return it is play with us.” Only now did she see the many tiny fish and other water creatures surrounding his body, dancing almost as happily as he. When he heard no response from the little Esk, he abandoned his cheerful demeanor for just a second. “You don’t remember do you...?” A pause. She shook her head with her eyes locked on him. Immediately after, Makoa returned to his usual joy.
“Well, it happens every now and then. No worries, you’ll be as good as new soon.” He frowned, thinking. “First we need to give you a name… I heard a good one close to one of the islands: Awa, I think it was. Alright, your name is now Awa!” Awa looked down, trying to remember her real name. But Awa did not sound half bad. Her eyes wandered off, back to the man next to her. She knew him… somehow. But who was he? Makoa, reading her face, answered that question in his own way.
“Who cares about him? Look, I’ll explain the situation to you. We… are Esk! We are no longer alive, nor are we of the deceased. We wander.” he pouted, when there was yet again no reply from Awa. “You know what wander mean right?” Awa kept her gaze on the man. Wander? Why wander? Why leave? This man was all she was looking for. “Hah, no bother,” Makoa said jovially. “Do you want to join us? I was just looking for new friends we can swim around and rediscover old places with. What do you say?” Awa finally found her voice.
“No.”
“So she can talk! Come on, we could have so much fun!” Though Awa was upset over her lost feelings, she couldn’t help but find comfort in Makoa’s attitude. Enough to keep Awa from getting annoyed, but not enough to persuade her.
“I need to stay here…” Her eyes shot up to look at the immense Esk before her. “I need your help! This human meant something to me, but I don’t know what!” His massive sigh betrayed his intentions. “You… you won’t help me?” He took on a serious pose, looking wiser than he had been since Awa’s encounter with him.
“I have been around for many ages, little one. The ocean knows when to tell us its secrets, and right now the ocean says it isn’t time yet. Besides,” he slightly dropped his wise man act. “It is such a chore to go into those kinds of things. Trust me when I say it is better to forget about it, and explore the rest of the world.” Sadness overtook Awa, and made her to look down at her paws. They had become webbed somewhat. Makoa jumped in to nudge Awa with his head, as cautiously as he could, and with a soft voice he comforted Awa.
“Lighten up, kid. Come with me. We’ll show you around.” For a moment, Awa wanted to.
“I can’t.” She expected him to get mad. “I’m sorry.” Makoa laughed.
“You gotta do what you gotta do, tiny one. You’re always welcome to catch up, but I can tell that isn’t going to happen very soon.” He started turning, queuing his aquatic friends to start leaving with him. Before he left, he turned his head and said the parting words. “I hope you find what you need to know, Awa. Once you do, come find me.” Then he shot away leaving a dust cloud that covered everything in a 100 feet radius in a thick blanket of sand. Including the body of the man.
Centuries past, and slowly, bit by bit, Awa’s old home sunk, surrounding the submerged grave of her old master. Rarely did she leave the ruins, out of fear something or someone would uncover the man and wipe out any chance of her finding out what keeps her there. Never did she meet her transformer again however. Maybe she will see him again soon. Many questions does she have that he can answer.
