imho Xander should have staked Darla at the beginning of BTVS, not Angel. Darla threatened Buffy but turned Xanders best male friend, Jesse Mcnally who was forgotten too quickly especially in fanfiction where Xander is often called 'jealous' for trying to stake Angelus.

yes. at the beginning of the story 'stolen innocence' Buffy beats him up and he fell down a staircase during the struggle and breaking his spine in the process after he stakes Angelus, putting him in a wheelchair for life until the brotherhood of taraka contacts him

Xander had a crush on Buffy but i think he got over it after she used him as a pole to make Angel jealous

many BTVS stories set in season 2 between Buffys birthday and Becoming (and beyond) portray Xander as the only Scoobie who treats Angelus like any other vampire, ergo dustbuster food but Buffy, Giles and Willow try to keep him from doing just that. In the show it took Jennys death to wake Giles up about the threat Angelus posed as far as i know.
