This is gorgeous Joshua. I love the painterly style and brushes you've used, very expressive and delicate at the same time

Thank you Laura! Yea it's refreshing to stay painterly. It's something I want to work into my finished illustration work more.Β

You're definitely welcome! I would love to see more like this from you.
The painterly style is something I'd like to develop myself, I think it would be nice managing to handle speed and refined drawings giving them different feelings. I have the impression this kind of effect needs more control than it seems though- I guess I will make a step after another before jumping into it

Cool, yea it does require a lot of control. Most of the sensitivity to mark making for me comes from practicing with traditional oils. It's easy to get into a habit with digital media to just throw down quick scribbles without really thinking about each mark. Ctrl Z can be a bad habit It helps to do studies of a small area of old master paintings. If you can find a high rez image then zoom in on a section of the face and try to analyze and re create the brush strokes from the original.Β

Oh, you totally said it- I found myself wanting to Ctrl+S a drawing a month ago .__. I would love to paint more in traditional, if everything goes as planned I should make a new picture this month and then hopefully, at least once a month. I don't work with oils mostly because of their costs, I go for acrylics and coloured pencils which in some way are a bit too related to my way of painting digitally! I should definitely go for oils or watercolours sometimes.
The idea of the studies from the masters' paitnings is really precious. I'm not very good at creating brushes, as I usually end up making only practical brushes (such as branches, or chainmails, or hair and such). Having a couple of traditional feeling- brushes would be gorgeous.

Haha, yea I totally think about my hot keys when I work with traditional. "Why can't I flip this canvas >_<, oh yea cause it's pencil and paper..." Yea if Oils are too expensive acrylic is the way to go. I'll hook you up with my current brush set. It's got a bunch of painterly brushes. I'll send you a link on facebook.

Flipping the canvas is another thing I wish I could do When you're working on paper you can still look at it from the other side, placing it against the light, but I guess it's hard when it comes to canvas!
Thank you very much for sharing it with me! Mind if I study them a little? I will probably end up making my own in either case, but I love studying brushes
