What inspired this artwork? I see a totem, so is the individual Native American? And if so which tribe, if you drew this with that in mind?

The title came from the facebook spitpaint group. (A group where random topics are given everyday and you paint a picture in 30mins related to a topic).
I chose to paint a Native American totem because it has a spiritual meaning, like the title. However, when painting the figure, I had a more Mayan/Aztec aesthetic in mind.
So it's a cross between the two cultures, which hopefully creates the impression of a more fantasy, make-believe world.

I see, very nice I wasn't sure if it was cross or not cause of the head piece and this is nicely done if you only had 30 minutes.

Haha no way I did this all in 30mins. I posted the 30mins version on the Facebook group and then worked on it for another hour or so.
Thank you anyway

so extremely incredible.
if you don't mind me asking, how did you manage the appearance of that transparent glowing blue of the soul? a particular brush perhaps?

Thanks!
Well, I painted the whole soul with a brush that is hard one side and soft on the other. After that I did a small touch of big soft brush set to colour dodge.

very nice! you certainly incorporated it into the work extremely well.
I still know very little of digital media painting/brushes/etc, as i'm still trying to learn/hone traditional fundamentals/skills before going digital, but i am practically starving of curiosity.Β - A brush that is hard one side and soft on the other, and a small touch of big soft brush/set to colour dodge, are those custom made brushes not available or are those brushes that already come with photoshop? (i only have photoshop elements unfortunately)

Thanks!
Yeah, I think it's good that you are practicing traditional first, but it's also very possible to practice fundamentals in photoshop too. So I would suggest diving into it!
The big soft brush is a default photoshop brush. The other one is part of this brush pack jamajurabaev.deviantart.com/arβ¦
They are quite textured brushes, so they can be fun to experiment with!

Wooooww....this is actually gorgeous!
I love the pulled-back view from the main figure, it really adds to the surrealness of it all!

Thanks a lot for your comments. I love to use vibrant colours in my work. Perhaps it is my style, I'm not sure.

Really nice. I like these vertically oriented aspect ratios. I guess this a 1:2? The little bit of color from the rising sun is perfect!

Thanks. It's not quite 1:2. It's 1080x1920 xD
