Description
Yes, I've already done a Discworld picture, but while that was an abysmally crappy photomanip (that just so happens to be my most popular piece... go figure), this is a full digital painting.I figured I'd gotten to a point where I could actually digitally paint the Great A'Tuin and actually do it justice, so I gave it a try.
Enjoy.

Ah, the magnitude of the Great A'Tuin before me. You've indeed done justice to it for this piece made me feel small.

Good, you should feel small... small like an ant small.

I haven't read anything from this series so I'm not familiar with what the art's representing, but wow- this is really, really great. Very professional work.

Thank you. The art is represnting exactly what you see, the world in which these stories take place.

I love the way you've handled the cloud cover and the Great A'Tuin. Typically, there's a vague dome of blue atmosphere over the disc and the central mountain of the gods is more prominent, but I guess everyone's entitled to their interpretations. Actually, I like the way you've handled space too. Space is typically far too boring for my liking.

There is a slight dome, but I didn't want to make it too big and it's none-to-obvious because of the height we're at. Also, I tried to make the disc bigger than most interpretations so it actually felt like a whole world, much like our own on one flat surface, thus the central mountain, while looking small from up here would actually be many miles high from the ground.
And yes, space does tend to be rather boring in these pictures, but I've spent many a long hour studying space art and reading tutorials on this kind of stuff, so I'm fairly confident in coming up with impressive space backgrounds when needed.

Yeah, most interpretations are pretty small given how much he's expanded it since its beginning. In fact, some interpretations even have little details around the edges that would make the disc very small indeed. As for the mountain, good point, but I've got to admit, I like that signature bloody ridiculous spire of the more typical interpretations.

Oh yeah, they're mighty pretty, but since I was drawing a flat world resting on the back of four giant elephants standing on the shell of an even bigger turtle... I figured I'd go for a little plausibility.

You don't want to see my other one, it's really not that good, done years ago when I thought I was good at this kind of stuff.
Thanks for the kind comment though.

Kewl! I love the Discworld novels. Terry Pratchett has a style that is way ahead of the majority of sci-fi authors.

Totally agreed. I've just started re-reading Making Money (I have two versions of that book, my reading one, and one signed by the man himself) and he is truly a genius.

I have read all of the the Discworld novels. In my opinion, TP is a genius when it comes to imagination. I also really like Larry Niven's Ringworld and The Serpent War Sagas by Raymond Feist, which I have just begun re-reading. Have you read The Runelords series by David Farland? They are also excellent books.
Sorry, I get carried away sometimes.....

No, haven't read them, but yeah, I've also read all the DW books (read most of Pratchett's books). I haven't read too many other fantasy/sci fi novels though, opting to read more humorous books, rather than fantasy (but I love fantasy, which is why I love Pratchett so).
