Part of a photo project on life in North Philadelphia--one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in urban United States.

Philadelphia is famous for its mosaic gardens. In North Philly, this tradition is used to give children alternatives to less healthy after-school activities. Village of the Arts and Humanities is one of the most extensive programs, which sets up whole lots and parks with extensive murals and mosaics made by young kids and teens throughout the neighborhoods. Many of these fall victim to vandalism and, ironically, end up disposed in the same vacant dumps and lots that drugs are sold and used regularly in. A mosaic representing the beauty of integration in the place that fears it most sadly stands little chance.
