Description Deforestation. I have never considered myself an extreme or even avid environmentalist. I certainly see the dire importance of keeping a close watch on the methods used to utilize our natrual resources, and avoid using them in place of less limited means when the opportunity is present. I don't though, feel that we need to be running out tying ourselves to trees. There are laws in America that require any large deforestation projects to plant two trees for every one removed. This doesn't necessarily help restore the immediate destoyed habitat, but it does counter the long-term effects of mass land clearing.

Our school is currently underway on a project for a new dorm building. This is causing a little unrest in the student body, because they have chosen a fragile wetland area as the zone to construct upon. These habitats don't form as often and easily as other areas, and therefore tend to be home to some less common wildlife. When these areas are destroyed, it is often difficult for these animals to relocate. While I wish that the board would have more consideration for these issues, I don't know that I reject the project to the extent of some students. What bothers me more was the attitude of some of the men involved in the clearing. Talking to them on the spot, I quickly got the impression that they were very proud to be tearing down this forest. I believe that he thought I was there because I was "some tree hugging hippie," while I was really just there to see first hand what was going on. He very boldy boasted the areas that would be torn down over the coming days. I understand the concept of cost and benefit, which is why I don't full heartedly oppose this project to the extent of some. I don't fully support it either. But I, for the most part, walked away with a disappointment in man, and 'his' lack of compassion and understanding towards the world we live in.

I like what you have written about this. Your drive to find expression of your personal views through photography is refreshing after seeing meaningless flower after flower shot.

I like that the photograph has a slight grimy feel to it, maybe it is the dirty machine or just the dark tones in the image, but it begins to follow conceptually what you were talking about. Also, from a compositional standpoint, I like the foreground/background relationship you estabilished with showing a piece and the whole machine all at once. It helps the photograph tell a more complete story.
