Description Sprawl
North Philadelphia, PA. USA

Please, view in full!

The power of this image is carried in its implied concept more than in its physical composition. This is another shot focusing on the same issue that Suburb Meets City shows. These mock-suburban blocks were placed in the middle of one of America's most dangerous urban neighborhoods--North Philadelphia-- to portray a feeling of fantasy to the low-income residents that live in them. To many, it sums up this societies skewed understanding of poverty, justice and humanity. It shows our tendency to presume that suburban style living--prideful of the "what's mine is mine and no one elses" philosophy, is the ideal way to live--when instead we should focus more effort on revitalizing our cities, which promote integration, community and environmental responsibility.

This image, I feel, symbolizes the problem with these out-of-place neighborhoods. When you attempt to dress up a problem without fixing it, all of the negative aspects of it begin to creep back in. On the left side of the image begins the reality of this part of the city. Abandoned factories, run down apartments and sprawling poverty. On the right side lies our attempt to cover all of that up with cheap, misplaced suburban style projects. Hopefully the rest of the concept is clear.
