Timmy had heard all of the horror stories about strange transformations. People waking up one day with a lot more fur than they'd fallen asleep with. People slipping on random puddles of goo that merged with their bodies, twisting and changing them. Random encounters in the woods leading to sudden tail growth. After hearing a few stories of this happening near his town, he made himself a bubble to live in. He had delivery bring him food (which he’d carefully selected to avoid anything with animals in the brand name so as to avoid potential transformation triggers), had a UV light and a reverse osmosis filter on his water supply, and HEPA filters in his HVAC system. And just in case magical transformations were in fact real, he'd invested in anti-magical protection amulets.
But when mutagenic fog spread through the streets of his town, he was not prepared. The bubble wasn't quite as airtight as he'd thought, so the fog was able to seep in. He struggled with the airlock, but it became increasingly difficult to work the handle as webbing grew between his fingers. Scales covered his skin, and a shell burst through the shirt on his back.
Ironically, he'd become a turtle: a creature that hides in its shell to avoid danger. And he wasn't a mutant ninja turtle, that'd at least have been kind of cool. No, he was just a normal turtle. Compared to this, he thought, being turned into a raccoon, a bear, or even a weasel didn’t sound so bad.

Moral: safety is good, but don't let the pursuit of it stop you from living your life.
