Description Kabuto were, until recently, extinct.

They are part of a family of animals that started off pokemon evolution. They were some of the first animals to have a metamorphosis transition into a new, more complicated organism to survive, or in other words, sped up evolution.

Millions of years ago they lived in their hundreds on the bottom of lakes and the ocean, feeding off plant and dead animal matter. Their shell is amazingly powerful and can withstand great pressure, which aids them in deep water but also in battle.
They have fake eyes under their shell which glow red, their real eyes are on top. The red lights are designed to lure small bottom dwelling insects and fish under the shell where they will be eaten.

Scientists recently had a huge breakthrough in DNA reconstruction and looked closely at cloning. It was only when they found a frozen kabuto in a deep underwater cave that they had an almost complete DNA strain to bring it back. They artificially inseminated Kingler eggs with the kabuto DNA and a few weeks later a baby kabuto was born. For a while they could not breed as they only had one subject to clone from and there would be complications if any breeding took place, that is, until they found another body.
This one wasn't as well preserved, as it was only the shell but there was enough DNA in it to clone another, by combining it with the first. After that they started to breed them.

After they found the kabuto a huge hunt began for more prehistoric remains that can be reconstructed.
A few more pokemon have since been found and reconstructed and scientists have been surprised how well they take to battling.
You cannot find these anywhere in the wild as they are only found in scientific research areas, but you can buy them for a small fortune.

Hope you like it.

Kabutos theoretically are based trylobits... but they (framers of games) forget about SEGMENTS. All trylobits have segments :3

(I don't know... "trylobit" is in english or "trilobit" or other?)

Yer your right, thats why kabuto would probably swim strangly

It would be interesting to see a Kabuto crawling slowly along the floor of a museum, walking right past its fossilized ancestor... Great work as always!

Never figured the red ones were the eye spots. Always thought it was the other way around. Though that makes sense.

What I find curious is that in the video game, all you need is a fossil in a cave, and bam, there's your fully generated pokemon. Seems illogical to me.

JoshuaDunlop In reply to Octoboy-the-8th [2009-06-10 22:12:30 +0000 UTC]

well really it just doesnt fully explain it, if its a frozen or preserved peice of ancient pokemon that theyve simply called a 'fossil' which technically wouldnt be correct cos no fossil has dna. if you did find some dna they could copy and mesh together dna to get a pokemon symilar to the original

Octoboy-the-8th In reply to JoshuaDunlop [2009-06-10 23:12:28 +0000 UTC]

That's what struck me as odd. With aerodactyl, it's taken from blood from an insect, so it makes some sense (though why that doesn't work in real life is a whole other story), but with fossils, the whole animal's been replaced by minerals, so it couldn't be regenerated. Frozen pokemon might work, but a stone fossil in a cave? Not so likely.

yer they didnt think that through, the only reason why we cant resurect dinosaurs is that dna dies after a million years so theres never enough to make a compleate chain. However we can resurect and are in the process of, reviving prehistoric mammels such as the saber tooth cat and mammoth. In the pokemon world you could say that aerodactyl etc died just under a million years ago and there for could be revived

Ud-the-Imp [2009-04-12 02:42:50 +0000 UTC]

Huh...always thought the glowing red eyes were the real ones...

I also take it that trainers can get a free Kabuto if they bring in usable fossils for them to clone with, right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshuaDunlop In reply to Ud-the-Imp [2009-04-12 09:10:12 +0000 UTC]

yer if the bring in a near complete dna strand, otherwise its too much hard work n money to be giving them away willy nilly, plus they have to be trained to train them and keep to a strict diet plan etc, alot of trainers would bother cos ther too high matinence

Both the artwork and the explanations are awesome! Now I've learned more about Kabuto. For instance, I didn't know those red glowy "eyes" were fakes. But I did wonder why Kabuto had black dots on its shell. Kabuto is a really fascinating PokΓ©mon - which evolves into a really cool Kabutops, one of my most faves. ^^
Really great work!

This is so utterly adorable. Ever since I saw a horseshoe crab for the first time I learned to love the little guys, which lead to Kabutops becoming my favorite PokΓ©mon.

I love how this little Kabuto seems to be secretly sneaking away in a quiet night at the museum
I really dig how you played with the contrasts; the red eye really stands out from the surrounding darkness. This picture sent a nice shiver down my spine because you captured the atmosphere so wonderfully, and it makes me think of a "to be continued..."-esque piece of hope for the little crab and its species x) I hope you get what I mean; I kinda lack vocabulary, haha.

Anyway, this made me smile Wonderful work!

I can imagine some little kid looking at a museum display of a kabuto, there seems to be one in every museum in the games with their dad, and then see this one scuttling away to freedom.
Scene would probably go like so...

Kid: "Daddy, Daddy, Look! A Kabuto!"
Father: Of course,(insert affectionate term), it a fossilized Kabuto."
Kid:"Nooo, a real live one, right over there!"*points at the errant pokemon.
*Father looks where his kid is pointing*
Father: WHAT THE HELL!
