This would make sense if someone had figured out how to purify Titanium before black powder had reached a certain degree of power. By 1750, everyone was forced to admit that heavy iron armor was a waste of time to make and wear, as it was either to thin to repel a musket ball, or TOO damn heavy to haul around if it was thick enough. Titanium at that stage would have been a game changer, however, extending the age of chain armor. Light weight Titanium steel chain mail would have repelled most types of ammunition at least up to WW1.

These soldiers don't need protection against gunfire. In the story, they need medieval style armor to fend off creatures of Death.
