This work is unique in a number of ways. The first, and foremost, is how you used a circular design instead of the standard, square-shaped image. This gives the viewer the feeling that she, or he, is perhaps seeing through a window or telescope. So the perspective how this scene is being viewed is already impacted by your choice in framing it.
Another benefit of the way in which you encircled the image is how it gives that "Commemorative Plate" feel. This looks like it could very easily translate to such a medium.
The way Spike's body is positioned makes you believe he has been asleep for quite some time. Perhaps he is currently now in a deep slumber and dreaming about Rarity. His tossing-and-turning made very apparent by how you made the blanket only covering him slightly as his body is no longer tucked fully into his basket.
The background colors, despite not being what I'd believe would be natural to MLP, work very well to accent the piece. Backgrounds aren't meant to steal away the spotlight from the subject in the image. You put a lot of elaborate shading and coloring into Spike, his basket, and the Rarity doll. The background only is there to remind the viewer that it is irrelevant to what the core subject of attention for this piece is.
