So Griffonstone certainly added a lot of interesting world building and history to MLP. but personally speaking it did feel a lot more like a village then an epic city in the sky

I think that the run-down village feel was the point. I get the distinct impression in the show that Griffonstone isn't only much poorer, but is also much smaller than it used to be. The ruins of the original kingdom have been so overrun as to be nigh unrecognizable, and the huts seem to be built on top of the remains of the castle. This isn't just a capital that has fallen out of favor, this is a capital that has been completely destroyed by time.

Considering they can fly maybe they have their city spread over the mountains as their way of dividing the sections of their city up.
That would explain why it looked so small.

Damn dude! If the city in the show had looked even half this epic (rundown but still epic) I wouldn't have been nearly as annoyed with it as I was. THIS I could totally buy as the capital city of a kingdom!

I'd like to see Gilda and Griffonstone return in the future. Maybe we could see Pinkie and Rainbow Dash return with Twilight at some point to see that the city has gotten much better and is close to returning to its former glory. And Gilda would be queen! That would be pretty cool to see happen IMHO.

As RPG settings go, Griffonstone and its environment seem more suitable than Ponyville for traditional sorts of games, even friendship-oriented ones.
Imagine. You could go dungeon-diving into the Abysmal Abyss in search of the Idol of Boreas. You could simcity your way from a dump of a village to a grand castle city on the mountain. You could social-RP through quest sagas convincing one griffon after another to join the friendship circles. It would be glorious.
