Description Help me fund my next volunteer trip to work with endangered animals just by liking this photo on Facebook . I'm hosting a points giveaway to thank you for your support!

This is Mae Lanna. She is 60% blind. Her eyes were most likely damaged by sling shot - the method used to force elephants to work in the logging industry. She was rescued from begging on the streets of Pattaya, and given a second chance at life at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

For anyone looking to travel to Thailand (or similar), please reconsider participating in things like elephant rides and elephants begging on the streets. For you to ride these elephants, their spirits are broken when they are still a baby/juvenile by putting them in a "crush" for days where they can't move and are tortured with heated irons and metal spikes (more info on the horrible process here: phajaan.webs.com/ ). Hooks that inflict pain or slingshots to the eye are used to control them.

Pass on the elephant ride where you hop on and off, never looking the chain-covered elephant in the eye. Find elephant sanctuaries like Elephant Nature Park that treat them well, where you can watch them roam freely and interact with each other, learn their names and personal stories, feed and bathe them. It's a much more enriching experience. ENP offers day tours, overnight stays and week long volunteer programs if you want to help out, where you can do all those things. There's even a dog shelter you can visit and help out in.

Be a responsible traveller. Don't support animal cruelty.

A few months ago, I went to Elephant Nature Park in Thailand to volunteer with the endangered elephants and with a local village community.
5 of my photos are finalists in a competition, where winners get $1000 towards their volunteer trip or to donate to the organisation they're volunteering with.

Great photo, really, and most importantly thank you for sharing this information about these great elephants with us! /
I was saddened to learn how her sight was damaged by the sling-shot method to force them to work...

It is good that you are spreading awareness in these various ways, and volunteering your time, and that others have this opportunities to also volunteer.
All of this is very interesting and GREAT information.
Thank you!!

And thank you for submitting it to Unframed-Nature

I decided to place it with our folder of "Animal Welfare"
Thank you!!
