Description It didn’t take but ten minutes for them to lose sight of Sissy. She had been assigned seed duty, which meant she planted seeds, after she had been deemed not large enough to carry supplies. She seemed fine with this at the time, but that meant Sevilen and Champ would be carrying supplies without her. And who knows what trouble she would get into on her own.

Champ wasn’t too worried, but Sevilen did not like the prospect of leaving her for whatever the reason. He was eventually won out with a lot of persuasion from Sissy. To pass the time and to get Sevilen’s mind off of his daughter, Champ tried sparking up conversation.

He had not yet had a real talk with him since they lived together, only making small talk over breakfast or the like. The most Champ had ever spoken to him was when he ranted and warned about his dieting habits. It felt to him a bit too out of place to try asking Sevilen about his past seeing as Champ had never really known anything about him before and had never asked Sissy, but now was as good a time as ever. They were alone after all. That hadn’t yet happened.

He tried starting with something simple.

“So, uh… how was Sissy like when she was little?” This spouted off a great deal of talk from Sevilen about things Champ already knew about Sissy. He sounded delighted in bragging about his daughter.

After that calmed down a little, Champ tried onto the next subject.

“Do you know how she got here? I mean, to Tao? She’s never told me ‘cause she can’t remember.”

Sevilen, who was by the way very adept at carrying a lot of things despite his lack of arms, put down his boxes with the others and paused.

“I do not know.” He answered. “Nor has she told me, so I believe you. At first I thought she might be bluffing because she seemed very dismissive about the subject.”

Champ was a little disappointed with that answer, as it didn’t seem to be getting him anywhere close to his goal. He set down his own parcel and trekked back to get more, Sevilen following behind.

“However,” He continued, firing Champ’s hopes again, “I do know how she came to you. She told me you saved her from some crazy Pokemon. Is that right?”

This wasn’t exactly true. He had saved her from Pokemon, but they weren’t crazy. Angry definitely, but not crazy. They were some Merchants who were upset because they had caught Sissy stealing berries from their food stand. But Champ didn’t feel like correcting him.

“Yeah, that’s right.” He answered.

“She said you took her in and sheltered her into your home, feeding her and giving her your bed.”

Here, Sevilen surprised Champ by swinging in front of him and giving him a massive stare-down. Champ had to stop short as not to run into him, but they were nearly nose-to-nose. His eyes were unblinking. Champ never realized just how stinking large the snake was.

Sevilen spoke again. “She said you two have gotten quite close.” He inched closer, making Champ feel all the more uneasy. Now their noses really were touching. “I hope you haven’t gotten TOO close.”

There was an uncomfortable pause in which Champ realized he was waiting for an answer. He tried swallowing, but there was nothing to swallow.

“No sir.” He finally managed. This seemed to satisfy the enormous, intimidating snake and he carried on his way, this time in the lead.

Sevilen really was a huge snake now that Champ was concentrating on it. He had only ever seen an Arbok once or twice before in passing, but he was sure Sevilen was even longer than those. If Champ could lie down next to him, Sevilen would be almost three times his length.

“I also know how I came of her, if that’s what you were trying to get to.” Apparently Sevilen wasn’t done. They reached the supplies again, and loaded up, each carrying two to three bags of seed and mulch. “You could have just asked you know.”

Champ scrunched his face a little. “Sorry.”

Sevilen laughed. He liked laughing, Champ found. And it hardly sounded like a laugh either, just a periodic hiss. “Sss, sss, sss!” But whatever he was laughing for, Champ didn’t get it.

“Sss, sss, sss! Oh you ARE easy to toy with, aren’t you? Sss, sss, sss!” Sevilen said through his laughs. Champ scrunched his face further. “Sissy said you were and I thought so. Don’t be too offended though. I like playing around.”

Champ cleared his throat loudly as they set down their bags and backtracked once again. “Okay, well, you were saying?” He hinted.

“Hm?” Sevilen looked lethargic from his laughter. “Oh yes. Let’s see… Where to start… Well, I suppose the beginning’s best. You see, Sissy and I used to live farther north where there weren’t many towns. We usually just hung around different caves and I hunted game. Winters were usually fairly harsh. Much worse than way down here where everyone starts freaking out when it hits sixty degrees.”

They picked up supplies again and turned back around.

“Anyway, there was one very cold winter where hardly any food was found. I couldn’t even find a Rattata to sustain us. I could go weeks without food. Arboks are just built that way, but I was worried sick about Sissy.

“I remember when I actually found some meat for her, I was so ecstatic I didn’t even check to see what it was before rushing it home. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Even if I knew what it was, I still would have taken it. Sissy was starving…”

He paused in thought. Champ waited for him to respond, but it was taking quite a while. “…And?” He nudged. Sevilen jolted a little.

“What?” He asked. “Uh… Oh! It turned out to be a Mankey. And if you know anything about Mankeys, it’s that they have fierce tempers. Well, around that area lived a tribe of Mankeys (more like a gang, really) with a Primeape leader named Og.”

It was Champ’s turn to laugh. “Og?”

“Yes, don’t interrupt.” Champ looked exasperated. “And wouldn’t you know it? The Mankey I found dead and alone in the snow turned out to be the son of Og. And Og was angry. So Og sought revenge. He attacked me, took Sissy, and that was the last I ever saw of her until a little while ago.”

“Just like that?” Champ asked as they yet again laid down their supplies and turned for more.

“Yes. I suppose he thought if I took his son, he’d take my daughter. I tracked him down of course, wasn’t hard in the snow, but when I got to them, Sissy was gone. They hadn’t a clue where she was either because they thought I stole her back and chased after me. I went searching for her, but…”

“So what happened to Og?” This story was turning out to be very interesting.

“Oh, he’s still chasing me. In fact, that’s why I barged in at Sissy’s play. I heard a Lopunny was sick in Alomomola and decided to check if it was Sissy. I had been following any source of Bunearys or Lopunnys up until then. When I reached the town, Og and his tribe were there and I hid backstage. Oddly enough, Sissy actually was there. Stroke of luck, I say!!”

Sevilen looked happy with himself. But this news worried Champ. Og sounded like a pretty dangerous guy despite Sevilen’s confidence. “You really think he’s still following you?” He asked.

“Oh, I know he is.” Sevilen answered, his smile gone. “It’s only a matter of time until he shows up. But I won’t bother with him anymore. Now that I have my Sissy back, I won’t hold out on the sucker.”

Now Champ was really worried. Who knew Sevilen’s actual power level and what he would do to Og and his tribe. And what if he tried harming Sissy again? Would all three of them be enough to ward them off?

While Champ was thinking these things to himself in the silence that followed Sevilen’s story, Sissy showed up looking brighter and more cheerful than usual, though she was covered in a slight layer of dirt.

“Guys, guess what?” She asked, hopping along the path to meet them. “I found us a house!”
