Project / Transformers - The War Within - Protectobots
The Ark - War Within - Protectobots - Defensor

A big project I've been working on since 2010. What I was aiming to achieve is detailed character study sheets of The War Within/Cybertronian, Protectobots and using the style of the Transformers: The Ark - A Complete Compendium Of Transformers Animation Models Book.

When I first read Transformers: The War Within comic book series and got up to The Dark Ages issues and seeing the redesigned Protectobots in Cybertronian robot/alternate modes, I was simply amazed and excited that they were done by someone! I couldn't stop marveling at them because they look so awesome and they felt the same like in the G1 cartoon, like having their own base and being away from the other Autobots. Then later finding out who designed them Don Figueroa a favourite Transformer artist of mine I felt more happy because I love his Transformer style of drawing and also appreciating the artist who drew them in the comic Andrew Wildman. I had to give more my thanks to them for doing such a incredible job and everyone else who gave them life within those pages!

One thing I would of liked is to have seen more of TWW Protectobots but I was more than satisfied with what they produced and due to the limited reference material of TWW Protectobot designs, this is where I passionately decided to draw my own fan thorough character study sheets for them, using all the information and references that was available. I tried my absolute best to make them accurate as possible from the original content and give them the G1 cartoon feel!

Special note: The task of creating the individual character Ark sheets for the Protectobots, was a challenge in itself already which I took seriously, however! There was no greater challenge then to design their full gestalt robot mode! This was the most exciting part, the opportunity to figure out how to draw the details of the parts that we couldn't properly see with Defensor's character design. For example the back view was a massive whole to unravel because there was no reference from the beginning on how completely it was drawn. The back view the limbs like Groove I looked back on the original G1 cartoon design and saw how odd it looked so I adapted from that so that the missing parts of Groove's alt mode was integrated into the final right leg limb mode design. Streetwise was another, I made it look simple and G1 styled as the left leg limb. Hot Spot as the torso the back view was very interesting to figure out and I came up with his arms folding back and upwards for a bit of kibble and good ol G1 blockiness along with the cool Repair Arms which those can also can become more support weapons. I created a new idea which was Defensor having a somewhat melee weapon from Blades right arm limb mode, his Blade Rotor Swords can combine into for only defensive and assistant purposes though it can be a deadly weapon! First Aid is one of the key figures being the left arm limb mode, he allows Defensor the ability to generate a more complete powerful force-field with the help of all Protectobot members synchronizing their energy together. I kept his Twin Fireball Cannons like from Hot Spot since I wanted to pay more homage to the original G1 Defensor design having them the same in gestalt mode. Finally the head design was a tough battle, the reason is like with other parts of Defensor in the comic, there wasn't a exact official design for his head, it changed from panel to panel and page to page which is all good since it gave diversity and I made sure I added what I call "Wheel Ears" and referencing the toy helped a lot too.
I have to mention this was my favourite part when drawing the WW Protectobots. I wasn't sure if I would even get around to attempting it but I did and I'm very happy with the results. I paid my absolutely best to make it feel it just came out from the WW pages and giving it the full Ark/WW/G1 style Touch!

Now I give you gestalt Protectobot Defensor, my sixth and final Ark style, War Within character sheet in the series. There you have it! All are One and complete!

I'd love to know what you people think and I hope this helps to give more of a broader design look of the character within The War Within universe!
