Description
Late afternoon shot of the opencast pit of the coal mine 'Welzow Süd' in the Cottbus-Senftenberg lignite coal fields in East Germany. The huge steel structure in the background is a F60 conveyor belt brigde. By its length of 600 m it almost doubles the height of the Eiffel tower. It runs on tracks and carries the outcast from one side of the pit to the other. These bridges are the world's biggest movable machines ever made. The total weight of this structure is about 14,000 t. See my short video on that bridge in operation at youtu.be/yzNjluyls-Q

When being there, I even felt like an avatar in a video game. The entire scene looked somehow unreal.

Well done, Joern. That's a wonderful photograph. I was born in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire coalfields of central England, but never saw any of the workings as virtually all of them were up to 1,000 feet underground.
I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

Thanks, David. It was a rare chance to get into one of these coal mines. Being there, it feels as if you were in a some kind of a dystopian industrial fantasy world. These pits are really huge. Coal, outcast and dust up to the horizon, as long your eyes reach. Big mining machinery everywhere. Unfortunately, I didn't carry a real camera. So, it's just a cell phone picture taken by a 4 year old blackberry classic smartphone. However, it quite captures the athmosphere, maybe even better than a super sharp photo of an upscale camera.

Better, much better than no photo at all. I am continually amazed at how good a cell phone picture can be.
