Description

Beside the classic North American F-units that I celebrated in my last pictures, there is actually also a European F-unit. It was made by Swedish manufacturer NOHAB as class AA 16. While based on an EMD licence, it is actually an almost direct copy of the Australian class B 60. The Australien B 60 was derived from the EMD class FP7, the passenger version of the F7. To reduce the axle load to Australian standards, the B 60 got six axles. In contrast to the FP7, it is a two-cab design as it is also typical for European locomotives. For the design of the AA 16, NOHAB took the B 60 and more or less just reduced the loading gauge to the Central European standard. The front area was also modified a little to take the forces of the side buffers.

The NOHAB F-units were originally used in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Hungary. Later, many have been sold to private operators in some other countries including Germany. The picture shows a TT scale model of the former Danish My 4242 in the paint scheme of the German company BSBS (Braunschweiger Bahn-Service). It is mainly used for construction trains.

Here, a photo of the TT scale model was embedded into a virtual environment made with the help of Midjourney.
