Well, Autodesk maya is not the only 3D software our there... there is 3DS Max, Softimage, Blender3D, Lightwave 3D, AutoCAD, etc.. but the most well know one for aniamtion is autodesk Maya.. every single special effect and animation made by movie blockbusters and animation company such as Pixar, dreamworks etc are using Maya...
you can get the trial or student version from Autodesk.com..

Oh I know there is other 3D programs, hmm... (I always get ahead of myself). Hmm Its alot to understand, I am guessing it takes more then one program to make what you make?

i only use 2 program.. Maya and Photoshop.. and for video editing i use After Effect..
