Description The similarities are few, but many between these two.
I have a theory.
Since "Roger Rabbit" is owned by more than one company, Disney was unable to produce an animated series starring the funny bunny.
Cue in "Bonkers D. Bobcat".
But all-in-all, maybe it was best there was no Roger Rabbit series, it could have killed the character's appeal with audiences sooner than expected. A blessing in disguise maybe?

Those feet, that jaw, his beedy little eyes- not to mention the undeniable rugged handsomeness! XD

I can't believe I never noticed the similarites between the two until this picture. ((wacks self on head with toon mallet)) Stupid, stupidhead me!

Great picture, by the way, very clean and professional. And the way the boys are sizing each other up- beautiful!

These are facts. I thought it was my theory too at first, but I've read it somewhere (book, or mag article about Disney history) and I think it also has something to do between the fallout between Disney and Spielberg.

Anyways, great drawing and nice idea

Miranda episodes felt like Cool World meets Cop Drama.

MissTooni In reply to ??? [2008-12-12 18:05:05 +0000 UTC]

But... there was a Roger Rabbit cartoon series... or at least they made videos with short Roger Rabbit cartoons on them...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jpox In reply to MissTooni [2008-12-14 03:19:01 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there was 1 VHS release of the 3 theatrical cartoon shorts.
Bonkers had his own Disney Afternoon television series that ran for roughly 3 seasons...

Ah! Well, then... I have the full VHS of the Roger Rabbit shorts! That means I own all the Roger Rabbit stuff that exists?

I remember Bonkers... Did Disney ever release that on DVD/VHS?

jpox In reply to MissTooni [2008-12-15 01:59:43 +0000 UTC]

That's great! Hold onto that VHS of Roger Rabbit's Best. The reason being that "Trail Mix-Up" is probably uncensored. On the DVD, a couple of gags are "covered up". I sold mine during a yard sale before I noticed the DVD version was "censored".
I think Disney released 3 VHS tapes of Bonkers? I have "Going Bonkers", the first episode of the series but unfortunately it's the edited version.

jpox In reply to MissTooni [2008-12-16 06:15:50 +0000 UTC]

If you're curious, I've only noticed the 2 following examples.
In "Trail Mix-Up" when Roger runs across the logs and picks up Baby Herman before saying "I almost dropped a log", he passes a poster for a tool of some sort where a scantly clad girl is riding a saw. That's blurred out on the DVD.
Right before Roger, Baby and the beaver are sent down the log flume, close ups of both Baby Herman and Roger pass by the camera. Baby Herman has Mickey Mouse ears in his pupils while Roger has skull and crossbones. Roger has simple round pupils on the DVD version. Not sure why that was even censored?
Being somewhat of an obsessive animation fan, I tend to watch frame-by-frame action for inside jokes that animators put in their cartoons.... Trail Mix-Up is full of them.

Thank you!
Roger's been one of my favorite characters since his film premier.
I wonder if Disney will animate him again one of these days? Benny the Cab actually had a couple of cameos on "House of Mouse".

Your welcome I really would like them to make a Roger animated film "pllllllleaaaseee" as long as the quality is still there and not a straight to video standard.
The film has great characters actually could an ironic twist that the villian is a CGi character as thats taking over and could have Roger etc saving Toontown from going cgi ?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jpox In reply to starkelstar [2008-10-11 23:04:13 +0000 UTC]

Well they did have a couple of prequels in script stage that had Roger coming to Hollywood and meeting Jessica for the first time.
One version had Jessica unknowingly working for a Nazi spy while another had Roger meeting Jessica while working for Broadway, possibly Vaudeville?
There was also a couple of animation tests created using 2D 'Toons with CG props and another where the 'Toons were CG.
I believe Eric Goldberg directed one, would be interesting to see.

Eric actually designed the characters, making Roger appear younger in years...

battybuddy [2008-10-08 19:47:01 +0000 UTC]

I actually wanted to do something like this for a friend of mine, who likes Bonkers better. I like Roger, so we kind of had a thing going for differences to show which one's cooler.

His argument is Bonkers is more like a 10-year-old mentality and Roger is about a 6-year-old mentality.
My argument is that since bobcats are called "bobcats" cause they have a bob-like tail, Bonkers ISN'T a bobcat. His tail's too long.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jpox In reply to battybuddy [2008-10-09 00:52:42 +0000 UTC]

Now that you mention it, Bonkers does seem a little more "mature" for a 'toon.
Roger's always so out of control, I think that was his downfall during his comic book adventures where he's partnered with another detective.
Originally, Bonker's tail was shorter before his official TV series as shown by these screenshots from his first appearances on "Raw Toonage".[link]

battybuddy In reply to jpox [2008-10-09 17:19:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, THAT'S the bonkers I liked better. I don't really understand why they changed it and made him a bobcat in name only...

He also had the little prongs-o-fur at the top of his ears I do believe... Like real bobcats. So, yeah- Raw Toonage bonkers was better.

jpox In reply to battybuddy [2008-10-10 00:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Well as the rumor goes, There were 2 separate incarnations of the Bonkers show.
1 with Lucky Piquel and 1 with Miranda Wright.
I think they tried to give Bonkers more of a "Roger Rabbit" feel with the Lucky series then changed over to the original envisioned show with Miranda. (note that Bonkers retained his "Raw Toonage" design in that version)
Even the animation styles changed drastically.

battybuddy In reply to jpox [2008-10-10 00:57:56 +0000 UTC]

You know, I never saw the Miranda Wright episodes, I don't think... I should look into that.

But yeah, the Lucky Piquel episodes were right there with Roger. I actually accepted a lot of the things they did with that show as part of the RR universe(Lets just say at the time I was working on a Roger Rabbit RPG that I've since given up on.). Only thing preventing me from ever seeing Roger and Bonkers as being in the same series was... the fact that they never actually MET...
I also think it took place in a different time period. Wasn't Bonkers more modern times, as opposed to Roger's being set in 1947? Bonkers might be calling Roger 'grampa'. LOL.

jpox In reply to battybuddy [2008-10-10 02:09:27 +0000 UTC]

LOL That's true. RR is set during the golden age of animation.
In the final 2-part Lucky episode, Lucky is kidnapped and presumed dead after an explosion. Miranda is from another division helping on the kidnapping case which introduces her to Bonkers. Lucky turns up alright and captures his kidnapper. Lucky is offered a job with the FBI so he moves away to Washington taking Toots and Fall Apart with him.
That's how they made the switch between versions.

battybuddy In reply to jpox [2008-10-10 15:28:04 +0000 UTC]

TOOTS? FALL APART? LEAVING BONKERS?!?

Fall Apart's not too hard to imagine, but TOOTS LEAVING BONKERS?!? That would be like if Lassie ran away from home, leaving Timmy to get his OWN self out of that damn well...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jpox In reply to battybuddy [2008-10-11 03:21:33 +0000 UTC]

LOL
That's what happened. Both characters were created for the Lucky series.
In the Miranda series though, you see a lot more of Jitters the Dog, Fawn Deer and the rest of the "Here's Bonkers!" crew from "Raw Toonage".
Yet another clue that the Miranda series was the original.
