Description
The similarities are few, but many between these two.I have a theory.
Since "Roger Rabbit" is owned by more than one company, Disney was unable to produce an animated series starring the funny bunny.
Cue in "Bonkers D. Bobcat".
But all-in-all, maybe it was best there was no Roger Rabbit series, it could have killed the character's appeal with audiences sooner than expected. A blessing in disguise maybe?

I do remember seeing Fawn Deer, and wondering where she went for the Lucky series. My theory was that the "Raw Toonage" thing was the job Bonkers had gotten fired from resulting in his cop job. Bonkers knew folks like Fawn Deer and Jitters as co-workers, but their relationships off-camera could be quite different(Baby Herman style different. ), hense Bonkers didn't really have too much of a priority to get back together with them(Kind of one of those "We gotta hang out again sometime when your not busy" arrangements where you never get around to working out the details). Fall Apart fit in(Despite not being actually IN RT) cause he was a stunt double, and thus he very well could have been around during the RT stuff working behind the scenes. As for Toots, I imagined him as kind of an old buddy/pet of Bonkers that he hung out with whenever he was out and about.
Thinking about it, yeah, I think Miranda might have been intended more as the direct link to Raw Toonage... I mean- look at her; her NAME IS A FLAT-OUT PUN!

I like Roger Rabbit WAY better than Bonkers any day. Although, I never really had much of an opportunity to watch Bonkers the TV show, but I've seen a few episodes. I wasn't too crazy about it. I usually read the comics in the Disney Adventures magazines. But regardless if Bonkers was as good or not, I still think it's a shame that Amblin wouldn't let Disney use Roger Rabbit any further. I think a Roger Rabbit series would have been good, either that or as cartoon shorts.

I'm kind of glad they didn't make a Roger Rabbit series....It probably would've killed the character's appeal with the masses.
The animation wouldn't have been up to par either probably. Here's an example of Roger animated for television:[link]

True, the animation is quite as good as in the movie, but that's mainly because of a larger budget of a Hollywood picture. I for one do think a Roger Rabbit series would have been pretty good at least, but that's me.

I like those similarites between Roger and Bonkers.
I don't know why but i feel that Bonkers is outdated today. It seems unoriginal but i already use to like when i was a kid. He seems funny but just the fact they don't air looks like that no one cares to the Bobcat.
Anyway, nice drawing and idea!

Thanks! Yeah, after Roger Rabbit, everyone started combining live action with 'toons.
I still like to watch his cartoony stuff sometimes from old VHS tapes I have.
Combining live action with animation seems to be the norm now since every movie features some sort of CG character/background.

I'm still interested by the fact that the last Roger Short premiered the same year Disney tired to establish Bonkers as a star.

Guess they really wanted to feed off of Roger's popularity!
This was the same year "Petal to the Medal" was released theatrically?
Or did "Raw Toonage" appear on Saturday AMs?

Actually, both Petal and Raw Toonage came about in 1992, a year before the final Roger short. so that probably puts Bonkers' development around 1991-1992-ish.

I think it's been discussed on here already....
It seems that the Lucky series was created after the Miranda series.
Notice that Bonkers' design in the Miranda series is the same it was on Raw Toonage, his first appearance.
When Lucky leaves for the FBI, he takes along Fall Apart and Toots, characters not used in the original series...
The humor was brought up a notch when they did the Lucky series by bringing more of a 'roger rabbit' flair to the show.

Just watched "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" the other night. It's the first time I've seen it in years Now I'm old enough (21) to understand all the jokes/plot.
I showed it to my little brother and he loved it. I mean it's Robert zemeckis, Alan Silvestri, Chris Lloyd, Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse! (And what guy doesn't love Jessica )
Anyway, cool drawing. I wonder if "Bonkers" was originally going to be a "Roger Rabbit" show? I know Bonkers was on "Raw Toonage" before he had his own show, but you never know.

jpox In reply to Stitchfan [2008-02-01 16:57:05 +0000 UTC]
That's the rumor anyway.
Since Disney didn't have total rights to Roger, they created the similar Bonkers.
Apparently, Bonker's 1st cartoon "Petal to the Metal" was actually released theatrically way back in the early 90s. Probably at very few theatres....
I loved Raw Toonage! Disney must have wanted to use that as some sort of leaping ground to introduce Bonkers and Marsupilami. While the Marsupilami show was used to introduce Shnookums & Meat.

Stitchfan In reply to jpox [2008-02-01 22:46:10 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes, Shnookums & Meat, Disney's competitive response to Ren and Stimpy. I remember both pretty well, but I wish I'd like to see Shnookums & Meat on DVD.
Marsupilami was a pretty good show as I recall, but I didn't even know where it originated until I moved to Belgium in 2000. It was weird to see a character I hadn't seen since my early childhood so popular and suddenly everywhere.

jpox In reply to Stitchfan [2008-02-02 00:08:20 +0000 UTC]
That's where the character was created right? I always noticed the similarities of Marspupilami's head designs to characters on the Smurfs. If that makes any sense...
People who worked on Ren & Stimpy actually went to work on Shnookums & Meat, a DVD would rock! Only 13 episodes, what's the hold up?

Stitchfan In reply to jpox [2008-02-04 14:50:43 +0000 UTC]
Marspupilami is either Belgian or French, but if you're right about the Smurf thing, he probably is Belgian.
Maybe because it only had 13 episodes they figure "Why bother". But you can get other short-lived series on DVD. Live the live action TV version of "The Tick", I have it on DVD and it's only like 9 episodes or so. Seen it? Patrick Warburton plays the Tick (very similar to "Kronk"), super funny.

your theory is absolutely correct,
thats exactly what disney did
but bonkers was still one hell of a cartoon
and roger rabbit appeals to a different style, even though the character designs are similar
also did you know there was a roger rabbit prequel planned, thank god that was scrapped...
anyhoo excellent work, this is an awesome piece

It always seemed obvious to me that Bonkers was a Roger Rabbit rip-off. At least they intitally tried to make the similarities somewhat less glaring by giving Bonkers a female partner, but then they revamped the series and teamed him up with the much more Eddie Valiant-esque Lucky. Either way, I was never a big fan of the show. I don't think they exploited the concept as well as they could have. Nice job with the pic, though.
