i've been drawn to this sort of nature-setting lately, but haven't been able to capture the feel and the dof like you have here. the title only helps things

haha i just realized the how I misunderstood the whole comment in my previous answer lol, my english sucks.
But well if you have a camera with zoom I guess that the best thing to do is to focus the subject with the maximum zoom and take the photo from the closest point possible.
The f1.4 really helps in this kind of photos.

I have a canon 100mm 2.8 macro, so i think i'll just need to shoot these scenarios in 2.8 rather than my preferred 3.5

wow good lens, I bet you get good sharpness at 3.5, but better DOF with the 3.8 aperture.
