Description Finally got the pictures from my mentor! With the poolcue photo was this one, which I had totally forgotten, of me making tempera - a traditional paint leonardo davinci etc. used. Back in the days, there went so much more work into painting! The paint didn't come in tubes. xD
Tempera is made of eggjokes, that have to be as clean as possible, and ONLY the yellow, so you have to make it go from one hand onto the other until the little sack is completely dry, after which you pick it up between your fingers, hold it above a cup, and prick it with your finger so the yoke comes out and the little sack is still in you hands. ;D It was so much fun, and totally something for me, waving around little eggjoke balloons. xD

Picture made by my mentor, and edited by me.

Heh, I'm quite the opposite really! The knowledge I have is almost entirely traditional, though I would like to learn digital. I thought the two wouldn't be so different, once you get the hang of it?

DerMonkey In reply to Jubriel [2012-03-31 11:09:24 +0000 UTC]

well its quite different in terms of the 'use' or 'application', as you have no wet media, thus no drying phase; you basically use the same 'canvas' all over again with the same brush (stylus)- everything that is emulating traditional tools (different brushes, mixing colors etc) is happening digital etc.
however.
i really think that coming from a traditional background gives you a major advance in terms of already knowing the basics, like behaviour of colors, how to mix and use colors to get the desired effect. jumping right into digital in the beginning sometimes lets one think you don't need those basics anymore, as the programm will take care of it (which it won't).

so while they are quite different to handle (especially in the beginning) they still have to obey the same rules.

(yess please try digital! )

Hehe, that must've been a smelly mess xD

Have you actually already used the paint to make something?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jubriel In reply to Laiyn [2010-01-10 20:52:51 +0000 UTC]

Luckily I wasn't there to smell it rot. xD

And yes, I used it, for a simple base thing, because tempera is real hard and slow (maaaany layers). I decided on painting the sign of Mordec. :3 It looks pretty awesome because you can see the cracks of the self made plate I'm painting it on. <3

Laiyn In reply to Jubriel [2010-01-10 22:29:23 +0000 UTC]

aaah, that's awesome!

lol... is it supposed to rot? XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jubriel In reply to Laiyn [2010-01-10 22:40:10 +0000 UTC]

You mean the paint? Well yes, it always rots, and you need to keep making new one. You can't really stop it from rotting really. xD Put vinegar in it to slow it down, and pinch your nose closed when throwing it away. xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Laiyn In reply to Jubriel [2010-01-10 23:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh lol, no I though the rotting belonged to the process of making the paint xD

But appearently it's just the paint itself that rots away, hehe

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jubriel In reply to Laiyn [2010-01-12 13:14:58 +0000 UTC]

Yep, although it does rot on the canvas as well, I've heard. Just smelly though, no wall of mushrooms or anything.
But tempera is more commonly used on walls and wooden plates covered in Gesso (a sort of plaster paste you layer on..veeeery slowly, after which you eventually sand it even) Luckily I love those kind of detailed, almost ritual like preparations. xD

Vissepopje [2010-01-09 21:47:06 +0000 UTC]

That is so cool. ^-^ What comes next? I meand.. there is more to it than only the eggjoke right? XD What do you need to add?
Do you also have a photo of a painting you made with your egg tempera?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jubriel In reply to Vissepopje [2010-01-09 22:21:59 +0000 UTC]

Yep, definitely more! xD Next you mix the eggyellow with the pigment, which in this case came out of a bag in already powdered form. You have to mix it on a mirror, or glass plate, because the colour is so strong it'll colour your surface. xD They also use this glass jack-screw to mix it, and I did it with a spoon. xD
And don't have a photo yet, because I didn't get very far with it. Tempera is a lot of waiting and patience, and..due to a few things coming in between I couldn't work on it and the paint was rotten the next week. Sooo, have to make new ones again, but busy with too many other thing to be able to do it right now..so. Muah, I'll make a picture of it soon! Tempera shows so much detail and the layering makes it so pretty!

Btw, thanks for the comment Vee!! How are you doing?

Vissepopje In reply to Jubriel [2010-01-10 10:45:50 +0000 UTC]

And I'm looking forward to see the result!

I've always wondered how egg tempera was made! That's so neat! The stuff we have at school come premade, of course, but I always imagine people mixing pigments with yolk.

You look like you're concentrating really hard on that little eggie! :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jubriel In reply to Arckaya [2010-01-09 22:05:25 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, yeaah, trying to make it open up on it's own with my mental powers! xD

The mixing was fun too, and the colours so vibrant! O.O

Also, there wasn't any acrylic paint in those days hmn, which is what is mostly used now. Pretty weird when you think about it, the differences.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Arckaya In reply to Jubriel [2010-01-11 04:05:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a huge fan of acrylic. It dries so quickly that I don't have time to think. D:

But oil takes way too long to dry, so I don't know what I like. XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jubriel In reply to Arckaya [2010-01-12 13:09:10 +0000 UTC]

True, although it is a lot more practical than oilpaint. And Tempera actually dries even faster than acrylic, or you can't really blend colours, like with oil. The common technique with tempera is building up small lines, very detailed, to give depth.
But there are a lot more kinds of paint, more than most people know. Like paint made with cheese, although I don't know the actual translation for that name. It somewhat resembles very vibrant pastel crayon on the canvas, although I don't know how it paints.
