not only that, they were flying into a storm with a ton of up and down drafts. what I remember was the squall in Caldwell, Ohio. there was a huge mistake on the captain's part. in fact the Shenandoah had suffered damages from the nose to the mid-section early in 1924 on January.

USS Shenandoah was such a lovely ship. A pity her backbone wasn't as strong as it could have been. Beautiful ship none-the-less.

The loss of the Shenandoah was not some much a design failure as it was from the desire to retain helium at all cost and having the greed for publicity over rule any sense of safety.Β

Yes, the PR campaign put impetus upon the crew to fly, unsafely at that. The story of U.S. rigid airships, really.
But it should not be forgotten Shenandoah was designed using the information gained from the downed height-climber L49, which inherently led to some flaws at the altitudes the US Navy operated at.
Indeed though, more than a few reasons.

And the British and French government airship programs as well. Β Only the German commercial enterprise managed to resist taking unnecessary risks.
There was general misunderstanding of L49 design or I should say of its limits. Β The loss of the R38 can partly be attributed to that.Β

Very much agreed. Durr and Eckener both were cautious men, and it served them well.
Not that Arnstein's "deep ring" design wasn't without merit in the later ZRS ships. But there too, demands and PR obscenity ended up being the greatest issues to success...

Reportedly the reason that Eckener didn't take the Graf Zeppelin to the north pole during its polar exploration flights was it would have violated the terms of ship's insurance! Β Truly a responsible man.
