the catapillar rears up like that because it feels threatened and is trying to make it's self look bigger. can't say it's doing agreat job of looking big and scary.
i really like this photo, you can see every detail on the catapillars skin.

the detail in this is stunning! so often, the smallest things are over looked or considered ugly.. but how could anyone think like that when there are images like this out there. the fantastic depth of field, vibrant colours and minute details really do make this an amazing capture!
