I am more reminded of Greg Bear's " Eternity". There is a mysterious inter universe tunnel in that story with a "flaw" down its centre which can be used as a highway, and one scene does have an object in the shape of a triangular prism seen moving along it.

Some of the levels just drives you bonkers. Especially the ones that give you tight spaces in the beginning.
