Description
After successfully using Blender to create a reference model for my latest picture with Kronosaurus, I've been playing around with it to see if I can exploit such skills to help me get a more 3-dimensional feeling in my illustrations, especially when it comes to lighting.I did this (not-so) quick model of a Spinosaurus standing ankle-deep in milk water and got pretty happy with it. So from now on I'll probably create simple 3-d models before painting complex pictures, which is fun.

Can you perhaps fill with your scrapbook the digital drafts? I'd love to read them

I've just made a folder in my gallery to put some 3d models

Maybe add some webbing between the feet and hands? After all, they are semiaquatic, after all.

Awesome model and enviable skills - This is one of the hardest dinosaurs out there to "un-see" as a monster.
If I may critique slightly, the rear area may have had slightly more muscles&fat at the base of the tail...

Julio-Lacerda In reply to nemo-ramjet [2012-08-27 15:55:29 +0000 UTC]
Critique accepted! I had a bit of trouble figuring out how thick the base of the tail should be. The angle doesn't favour it much, but I'll beef it up a bit more.

Great job...I'm loving the gular pouch!
I think it just would need thicker legs and tail and slightly larger claws, for all we know at least the thumb was probably twice that size.

haha Thanks made! You should try it too! It's surprisingly easy to get the basics for 3-d modeling, provided you have the patience. Someone as artistically talented as you could surely make the leap to 3D media!

Cool idea. The spinosaur model is lovely in its own right. Very serene, although that might just be the milk

This is a really good idea, maybe I should actually make an effort to get over the learning curve for a modeling program.

I used to do this as reference before painting, but time is tyrant XD

Indeed! Although useful it takes quite a lot of time to make the whole model, pose it, render it an THEN start painting

Nice job. I like the dewlap/pelican pouch, you don't see those (Without excessive spikes or wobbly things) on spinosaurs very often.
π: 0 β©: 1
Julio-Lacerda In reply to Drakonial [2012-08-26 23:23:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I don't particularly like the spikey, Todd Marshall-ish style. But it's always fun playing around with soft tissue, and since spinosaurs were gulping down huge fish back then, they might as well have had big dewlaps.

And it's a nice opportunity to get some brighter colors in there. Sexual display and all.

YOU CAN DO 3D MODELS NOW? That's like giving Hitler a doomsday machine, shit's about to go down. Amazing model! This will definitely improve your artwork--which IMO was already quite fantastic.

NICELY done and a good idea - is it quicker than making a maquette?

Julio-Lacerda In reply to raven-amos [2012-08-26 22:38:30 +0000 UTC]
Probably; I guess you can achieve a very precise shape and therefore precise shadows (which is mostly what I want) easier and quicker than by building a real model.

Then why don't you use Sculptris It's much easier than Blender I think...

I don't know, I got used to Blender... I like how it seems more precise. I did download Sculptris though, gonna give it a try.

Well, let me learn a bit more about modeling in general and I'll think about that. I always wanted to make (or remake) models for ZT2 anyway

Basically it's a place to drop half-done stuff, so you might drop your models there, just say hi first
