Day 2 || 14.00 || CLINIC 4: Going the Distance with Johanna in the outdoor arena [Nº 18].
Riders learn how to judge striding on foot and then develop distancing in the saddle between obstacles with the help of ground poles.
Story: 473 words
Johanna had begun the lesson with all the riders on foot, teaching them how to count strides with simple math and the length of their own walking strides. For beginner and less inexperienced riders it was more of a lecture than it was for those with experience, but Julia always thought that it never made any harm to review the basics and see how other instructors taught the way to count the strides.
Eryn caught her attention as Johanna made them stop in front of the two stride double, explaining to the group how to approach it and the reason for the poles before and after the jumps. Since their talk last night the Spanish was not that shy and awkward around the other rider, and she was way happier than what she allowed to show to have gotten to know someone in the clinic.
"Ya know, I really am learning more than I thought I would. I'm excited to try this out on Fanta. She is quite natural in her strides but I need to be natural too." Eryn crossed her arms looking at the two stride double.
Eryn had never felt more comfortable in a clinic setting or show setting alike than she was after befriending Julia last night. The pair spent at least an hour just the two of them and then a few more when Skye and Chris joined them. They talked about Julia's horses, that she had a sister and Skye had invited her to CUC for a retreat.
"Yeah I always think it is good to see how others teach something, even if it seems repetitive." Julia chimed in. “And with Caraxes… that stallion is a fly or die over jumps, don’t think he’ll ever refuse going over an obstacle…” The comment made both of them laugh a tad too loud, Johanna looking at them with an eyebrow raised, almost looking as if she was going to ask them if they wanted to share the laughs with the rest of the class, though the question never came.
The second half of the session had both girls on their rides and had both Trakehners fascinated by the ground poles. Eryn could not for the life of her convince Fanta that these were the same poles that were set up on the jumps, just now it was on the ground. Caraxes on the other hand 'bravely' approached the menacing pole on the black footing. Shielding his damsel in distress from the fearsome ground pole. Eryn rolled her eyes. Mares. Julia on the other hand had a good laugh at the pair of horses who were cosplaying Romeo and Juliet, never imagining that the flaxen stallion would be ever so chivalrous as he usually did not really pay attention to others, was he perhaps also being lovestruck of the mare?
