Description Starbucks sure would have an interesting logo in my fakemon world xD

My entry for the first part of AdamFegarido 's and Malamarvellous  ' Line contest.
Details of the contest here! adamfegarido.deviantart.com/jo…

This uses set 1.

Just as a side note, I'm replacing the word Pokémon with Pukémon, and Forme with Mode. I'm treating my fakemon creatures and worldbuilding as a separate parallel existence that mirrors that of the real Pokémon from here on out. Yeah.

Mezuline Hazard Mode >>> Mode Change <<< Mezuline Pristine Mode

Mezuline /mɛzuːlʌɪn/
メズライン Mezurain
Poison/Dragon
The Sea Witch Pukémon

Name Derivation
English:
from melusine, supposedly a river or freshwater spirit from european mythology in the guise of a woman, or a woman that was cursed, having the additional form of a dragon or a half-woman half fish or serpent with two tails - in alchemy she is a sign of unity of two halves (earth and water);

line as this was a new creation of mine specifically made for the contest and wanted to reference that too;

Lapis Lazuli (for the deep blue colouration, though that's referring to the Pristine Mode, not shown here).

It's also a transliteration of the Japanese name, which is the one I decided on first.

Japanese:
メズラ is from the character  珍 (mezura) in the word 珍しい (mezurashii, japanese for unusual, rare, or new etc.);

The character can also be  珍(zhen) from 珍贵 ( zhengui / zhēnguì  - chinese for precious). Shaymin's name also derives from a chinese meaning of a character, and I wanted mirror that here with a pukémon that also deals with pollution - of the water as opposed to air (I couldn't find a hebrew word that fit as well, though);

'Precious', 'new', 'unusual' - Mezuline harbours the power of renewal, taking what was once discarded or deemed useless,trash and turning them into something beautiful and more pure. It's a reference to the mermaid's tears or sea glass phenomenon (small pieces of glass or plastic found in the world's oceans. When bottles, cups, or other debris are dropped or dumped into the water, they often break apart and eventually form into smooth, rounded shapes. People collect them!)

ライン is simply a transliteration of the word line, and though not pronounced that way the romaji spelling rain does give a hint towards its water affinity and cycles.

Design notes
Even in my stash of sketches hidden from the internet, I barely make any legendaries. I actually have another weirdo that was made for a contest a long time ago - you may see that one come up on my gallery... eventually. But I wanted to make a Legendary this time!

Not shown here, but I also designed the Pristine Mode of Mezuline pretty much simultaneously - the weird horns the hazard mode has got are a corrupted form of the pristine mode's horn design; which are joined together to form a sort of necklace with smooth glass beads embedded. For the Hazard Mode you can see the glass beads have been corrupted into jagged spikey forms, and the horns split from each other, sort of resembling hair and tentacles. Most of the glass bits are being obscured too, but not completely - the appearance and behaviour have taken a drastic turn but some semblance of the Pristine Mode remains (Which is its more benign form). The spikes on the head are reference to the crown that is usually depicted in images of the melusine.

Mezuline Hazard Mode was supposed to be more monstrous and angry/vengeful looking, so I tried to give it a kraken sort of feel to it. Like the stories of the kraken, in this state Mezuline will actively go after any ships and sink them. The longer fin thingies (which are supposed to resemble the twin tails of melusine) I pictured would act as its legs on land (the flipper fold behind the claws, with the claw tips being in contact with the ground), and it can scale rocks and cliffsides by digging its all of its claws into the rock.

Lore Stuff
I keep mentioning corruption so I'll sort of explain what Mezuline actually does. In the far distant past, it was a legendary mon of the water, that kept the water ecosystem in check by ridding of harmful impurities such as oil spills and dumped waste etc. It even made lovely little trinkets (shaped like tears) as part of the process, and people used to collect any that washed up on the shores. To certain cultures the tear shaped trinket, as well generally tears, represent renewal of hope, or a rise after a fall. It was said that though the individual tear has little power, enough of them can remove all sorts of ailments or curses.

However, humans and to a much lesser extent, other pukémon, have grown complacent in regards to the respect towards the seas and other bodies of water, hand have started to neglect them. The pollution became so bad at one point, Mezuline had no choice but to take all of the pollution into her own body, and then releasing a vast amount of purified matter that engulfed the world. Many species did not survive the flood, but those that did set about rebuilding the world anew. The event had left Mezuline in a damaged state, and while it was in stasis for many thousands of years onwards, its resentment clung. In the present, Mezuline has made certain seas nigh impossible to fly or sail through - taking its bitter rage out on ships that dared to traverse her realm. If only she could remember her original purpose, and rekindle the kindness settled far deep within, perhaps she can revert back to her original form... and begin anew once more.

Gender Differences
Its a Legendary, which are usually genderless in canon games, and are otherwise unique 'mons. I'd put this as strictly female though.

Whoa! By far the best entry so far I think! Part of the reason is because you can't tell there's anything off in the design/anatomy, the lines are really well incorporated in the design

Thanks! Perhaps its because I worked on it, I can see the odd bits made to fit the lines here and there. I try not to pay attention to them, but they just stick out x.x

So I'm very glad it might be not so obvious to everyone else!

and I'm sorry for being late on the reply :<

I saw some strong entries (your fighting/dragon included), I can't say I see myself winning as easily as you make it sound (if at all). But thats quite the compliment, coming from a talented artist like you - thank you so much

Without any doubt this a pretty creative design and use of the lines! However...In what is based this fakemon?

Thanks for the fav!
I'm actually still writing the description of it which will explain it properly. In the meantime, I can tell you it's based off of the Melusine, a twin-tailed mermaid thing symboldictionary.net/?p=1153

Don't worry! I think extensive descriptions are good. Also, explain the design always help to understand it better! And well, lore is always nice to know. Said this I must say that I love how you constructed this fakemon and her lore!
