Description A more closeup shot here .

A collective shot of most of the pieces I've made during the past few weeks. They range from simple shapes to more complex things (I really enjoyed making the california rolls and shrimp sushi XD) - the most interesting thing though, is how you learn a process for each item you make. Some of them required a lot of thought... how to make a certain texture, what part to make first, what the most efficient method is. Overall, very very interesting for me. XD

They're actually glossed and everything now - photos coming soon XD

Working with clay has been a lot of fun, and it's been a wonderful outlet outside of work.

Most pieces are made with Sculpey III, the rest made with Cernit. (I usually mix the two together, for an interesting consistency.) All pieces are no bigger than 1 inch.

These are absolutely adorable! I hope to be making some keychains of my own in the future too. ^_^ Where should I look for the straps though?? I'm clueless on that account. lol.

Thanks for your comment!

The straps have random names: lanyard, lariat, cell phone strap, etc. If you google any of those you'll find jewelry wholesale sites that sell them in bulk, or if you want to buy smaller quantities I would recommend Etsy ^^ Usually when I need to refill only one color or so, I use Etsy. If I have a lot to refill and need to buy several hundred, I use the jewelry wholesale sites (since then you get a deal on shipping and etc.)

Good luck!

Oh no worries - my very first charms were so ambiguous, a lot of them were questionable XD
Those are actually shiitake mushrooms! If I had to make them again today though I'd probably make them a bit different XDD

Omg, i lovvve the sushi ones!! I want to try sushi!! But I haven't been able too..

Anyway, I love the entire thing. ^^ I wanted polymer clay about a year or 2 ago, to make little food and such [not baked tho] to give to my stepsis for her barbies and such, but- I nvr would have thought of making Charms out of it, until I saw a new entry with them last night on here!

Awesome work.

Actually, I've had this huge question for a while, but never managed to get a good answer. Is there some way to work with clay that has such fine details as this without getting fingerprints all over it?

For example, I absolutely love those oranges you've made! The leaves are so cute and beautifully detailed, and the orange itself has a nice texture. Anytime I try to attach something like that, I end up leaving fingerprints on the orange, or squishing the leaf improperly.

Does learning that come in practice, or is there something I'm doing wrong that I should be avoiding?

junosama In reply to Azuvala-Assantri [2009-12-28 22:58:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes! The secret is in using tools

I only use my fingers/hands to roll balls and to make the basic shape of something. For everything else, I use tools- even to stick things on. For example, I first roll an orange (and since it's already around it no longer needs any further messing with - since you rolled it, it shouldn't have fingerprints on it.) lately I also take a pointy tool and poke little dots onto the orange, to add extra texture. Next, I roll a small ball of green for the leaf, and use my fingers to make it into the leaf-shape - however, after that point, I no longer handle the leaf with my fingers. Instead, I use my x-acto knife to move it to the orange, and I also use the knife to stick it on. This lets me avoid having a huge fingerprint right on top of the leaf. I then use the knife one last time to make the veins.

Even when rolling clay, I usually don't use my hands either- I have a clear acrylic sheet that I use to roll clay into logs or balls. The main thing to keep in mind with polymer clay is that the less you mess with it, the better it looks - you want to try to get what you want with as few steps as possible.

In terms of tools, I just picked up a random assortment of wood and metal-based carving/sculpting tools from various polymer clay websites and my local art store. You can make your own tools too -a thick needle taped to a pen, for example. I also use an old eyelash/mascara applicator as a brush to add texture to things like bread or cookies.

The key is in the tools! Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

junosama In reply to smokinoaken [2008-01-08 00:20:08 +0000 UTC]

I shaved a bit of soft pastels and brushed it on the top - it creates a very nice gradation effect.
