Jun, Duke, and their new companion, the baby Nargacuga had made it back to the village, though Jun had to help support her brother, seeing that the pain from his broken ribs made it difficult to walk without assistance. Despite his proud nature, Duke preferred to allow others to help him when the risk of causing greater injury to himself or others was higher than under normal circumstances. Now, though hunters of this time had the same medicines as modern hunters, their methods of crafting most of them were mildly primitive, and therefore, not nearly as effective. Another problem was that you couldn't consume as many, due to the possibility of becoming poisoned from an overdose, as well as your body becoming gradually more and more immune to the medicine's healing effects.
The group approached their home, and Jun had reached for the door knob. Gently twisting it to her left, she pushed the door open with her left foot and helped her brother over to his bed. Taking care not to hit his injured ribs, she sat him down onto the bed. She had removed his arm from her shoulder, and stood up, allowing her wounded brother to lay down and attempt to get comfortable. He was obviously hurting a great deal, judging how hard he was fighting to show any pain. Jun knew better though. Smirking, she looked at her brother, and poked him gently in his broken ribs. Clenching his teeth from the pain, Duke glared at his sister.
"You might be able to fool everyone else my dear brother, but you can't fool me! I know you're in pain, so you don't have to hide it from me!"
Duke couldn't help but smile at his little sister.
"You're a piece of work, you know that? Poking your injured brother right in his busted ribs. You're such a little shit!"
Jun burst out laughing, and then replied, "You wouldn't have me any other way! Now come on, let me help you take off your chest piece!"
"Fine, but just help me with the buckles, I can get the rest."
Jun grinned and shook her head.
"Stubborn bastard."
The baby Narga was observing from Jun's shoulder, curiously wondering what was going on. As Jun unbuckled Duke's chest plate, the dangling straps caught the Narga's attention. It started to purr loudly, batting it's paw at the dangling straps. Jun smiled and looked to the baby Narga.
"Well, aren't you just the most precious thing! Duke, look at it!"
Duke glanced at the small Narga, smiled, and finished removing his chest piece. He let the armor slide off of the bed, and then removed his helm and gloves, setting them by the chest piece. Jun looked to her brother, and then out the window beside his bed.
"Will you be okay if I leave you for a few minutes while I go to turn in our completed quest cards? We might as well get paid for our work."
Duke nodded and said, "Yeah, I should be fine. When you get a chance though, could you bring me a potion or two to help speed the healing process?"
Jun nodded and reached into her pouch and handed Duke one of her potions. He removed the cap, and slowly sipped the somewhat bitter tasting drink. He could feel the pain slowly subsiding, as his bones began to mend themselves at an incredible rate. Still, he knew he would need at least a full day of rest.
"Thanks Jun. Anyways, here's my quest card. They shouldn't give you much hassle about turning both in, seeing that I'm currently bed ridden. I'll be here until you get back."
Jun smiled and replied, "Okay big brother, I'll take care of it."
She looked to the baby Narga and playfully said to it, "You be a good little wyvern for me, okay?"
She gently scratched under the baby's chin, who cooed and began to purr for the huntress.
"Okay! I'll be back soon!"
With that, Jun walked out the door, gently closing it behind her, and started walking toward the guild hall.
Duke watched as his sister had left and turned to the small wyvern. It was curled up at the foot of his bed, seemingly asleep.
"I should probably take a nap too," Duke quietly said to himself.
He laid back down and closed his eyes. He almost immediately fell asleep, most likely from being extremely tired after a battle with thatDeviljho. The small wyvern, hearing Duke begin to gently snore, opened its eyes. It stood up, followed by a simultaneous stretch and yawn. The baby scanned the room. No movement, save for Duke's chest cavity rising and falling. It softly and silently climbed down from the foot of the bed, and quietly started to walk around the room, examining all of the strange objects that filled the room. It looked to Duke's armor that he had placed at the side of his bed. Cautiously walking over to the several pieces of armor, it sniffed each piece. It turned its head with curiosity, and poked at the armor with its claws. The scent was familiar, though it couldn't quite remember how or why.
Meanwhile, Jun had found the quest receptionist, though the young girl seemed to be a bit busy dealing with a line of hunters that arrived shortly before Jun and Duke returned from their hunt. Not feeling like waiting in line, she sat at a table , near the exit of the Guild Hall. Within a few seconds, a young waitress was standing in front of the table, smiling at Jun.
"Hi there Jun! How was the hunt?"
"It went fairly well, though Duke got a bit banged up by a Deviljho we encountered. He's alright, and should be back to hunting in a day or two."
"Oh that's terrible! I'm glad he's okay!"
Pausing for a moment, the waitress pulled out a pencil and small notebook of paper from her pocket, and then looked back at Jun.
"Can I get you anything while you wait?"
Jun smiled and nodded.
"I'll have a cold pint, if you don't mind. Might as well enjoy myself a little while the receptionist finishes up with these hunters."
The waitress smiled and replied, "Alright! One cold pint coming right up!"
The waitress jotted down the order and made her way to a large barrel where the beer was being kept on tap. She grabbed a mug and filled it to the top with some of the finest beer in the land. She carefully walked back to the table, and set the mug down. Amazingly enough, she didn't spill a single drop. Jun paid the girl and gave her a nice tip of 5z, even though the beer was only 2z. She picked up the large mug, sipped just enough so she wouldn't spill any, and then took a few large gulps. The ice cold beer was wonderful, both in taste and temperature. She immediately felt a bit better about having to wait. Besides, just what could go wrong at home for the short time she would be gone?
At the same time, the baby Narga was beginning to grow hungry. Sniffing the air, it could smell some fresh meat nearby. Following the scent, it made its way into the kitchen, where Aiko was preparing a steak for her master, Jun, for when she returned. The felyne had learned some cooking skills from many years of observation and instruction under Jun's mother, Lothrien. It came in handy quite often, for when Jun and Duke would return from a hunt, they would often be quite hungry. The thing that the felyne didn't realize yet, was that she was being watched from the shadows by a baby wyvern, waiting for her to move away from the steak so it could grab the meat for itself.
The baby Nargacuga silently crept closer and closer, using whatever it could find as cover, until it was right under the table. It knew it would have to create some sort of diversion in order to get the felyne away from that delightful looking steak. Scanning the room, it noticed a broom resting against a wall, somewhat close to where Aiko was preparing the steak. While it was still developing it's spiked scales on its tail, it could still release a couple from its tail with impressive force for a Narga of its size. If it could hit the broom just right, it would fall right onto the table, startle the felyne, and give the small wyvern an opportunity to grab the prize. It would have to be fast and accurate, which was no problem for even an immature Nargacuga, such as this one. Though it was only a few months old, it had already developed many of the stealthy skills that its kind used to survive and flourish, such as silent, but speedy movement, knowing which hiding spots would be better suited for ambush, and which would be better for simply concealing itself. It learned a lot from its mother...
Taking care not to hit the posts of the table, the baby Narga swung its tail around a few times to loosen the spike-like scales on its tail. After three good tail swings, it took aim and released a small barrage of three spike scales from its tail right at the broom. Each scale hit the base of the broom, just like the small wyvern had planned, causing it to fall onto the table, startling the felyne.
Jumping back from the sudden loud noise, the felyne screamed, "NYAAAAAA!"
When Aiko landed, she did so on the edge of the table and lost her footing, causing the felyne to slip and go crashing down to the floor, with the broom landing on her little head, stunning her for a few seconds.
Now was the time. As soon as Aiko jumped, the baby Narga leapt into action. Using it's powerful hind legs, it jumped out from under the table. It then immediately bounced up onto the table's ledge. Digging into the ledge with its claws, it pulled itself up over and onto the table. Scanning the area for a moment, it then spotted the prized steak. Wasting no time, it pounced onto the meat, grabbed it with its mouth, and leapt off of the table. As it landed, Aiko came to, noticing the small wyvern making its way into the room where Duke was sleeping, with the steak she had worked so hard on, in the creature's mouth.
Aiko chased after the baby Narga and yelled to it, "NYAAAAA, GET BACK HERE, NYAA!"
The Narga knew it had been spotted, so it quickly hid in Duke's pile of armor. The felyne began to search frantically for the baby wyvern, trying to follow the scent of the meat. The fact that the window was open and Duke was snoring loud enough to wake the dead was throwing her concentration off. It had to be around here somewhere...
Meanwhile, Jun had just finished her seventh mug of beer, and most of the hunters had already gotten their quest rewards from the receptionist. Jun stood up and wobbled over to the receptionist.
"Hello there Jun! Come to claim your reward? Where is Duke?"
"He got a little banged up fighting the Jho that decided to rain on our parade. I'll be collecting for both of us."
The receptionist smiled and replied, "Okay, no problem! I'll just need both of your completed quest cards!"
Jun reached into one of her pouches, pulled out the cards, and handed them over to the receptionist.
Carefully examining the cards, she looked up to Jun and said, "Okay! Everything seems to be in order! Here is your reward for the completion of the quest, and here is the bonus for the Deviljho you two hunted as well! Have a nice day!"
Jun quickly and simultaneously counted and began to sort out the zenny. Despite her mild intoxication, she was able to count and sort it all out with little to no difficulty.
She smiled at the receptionist and replied to her, "Thanks, you too!"
Gathering up the zenny into two separate but equal pouches, she turned around and started to walk back home.
"Might take a little longer than before... Shouldn't have drank that much,"
Jun said to herself, as she clumsily began to stumble her way back home.
The small Narga was watching Aiko's every move. Its hiding spot was near perfect. There was only one problem. It was very hungry, and it couldn't resist the temptation any more. It held the slab of meat down with it's front claws and ripped a chunk off with it's razor sharp teeth. The meat taste was simply divine, and the texture was much better than it had bitten into in some time. Swallowing that chunk after a few chews, it bit into the steak for some more of that irresistibly delicious, protein filled meat. It's eating hadn't gone unnoticed though. Despite all of the noise from the outside and Duke's irritatingly loud snoring, the rustling armor was easy enough to spot for the felyne. Moving outside of what she guessed was the Narga's field of view, she silently crept up on the occupied little wyvern, until she was within pouncing range. Readying herself, she sprung into action, leaping onto the rustling armor, wrapping her paws around it.
"NYA! I'VE GOT YOU NOW, YOU LITTLE CROOK!"
Grabbing hold of the meat, the baby Narga used it's powerful hind legs to leap from out of the pile of armor and break free of Aiko'sgrip. The two met eye to eye for the first time, both trying to anticipate the other's move. Then, the baby Narga suddenly leapt to the side, bumping into a small box of felvine bombs, knocking the box over and spilling the bombs onto the floor. Aiko followed the wyvern, taking care not to trip or set off any of the bombs. Then, the baby Narga leapt onto a guild flag the hunters had hanging on the wall. Aiko followed the wyvern, and both sunk their claws into the flag, causing it to tear, and them to slide down from where they initially attached themselves. Since Aiko had just caught the bottom of the flag, she fell off after sliding down, right into the felvinebombs, though to her surprise, managed to not set any off.
The baby wyvern then used this time to distance itself from the felyne, leaping onto the ledge of a nearby dresser. Sinking its claws into the wood, the Narga pulled itself up onto the top of the dresser, knocking over a vase of freshly picked mountain herbs onto the floor, shattering the vase. It then immediately leapt onto the curtains by the window, just above where Duke slept. Noticing that the felyne was still relatively close to where she had fallen, the Narga swung its tail around, loosening the spiked scales on the tip of its tail, and flung two of the loosened scales at Aiko. She dodged them both by a quick leap backwards, though she didn't realize that in doing so had caused the spikes to hit the felvine bombs, causing them to explode, and simultaneously sent the felyne flying into Duke's bed and covering her in felvine, putting her in an intoxicated state. At the same time, the rod holding the curtains gave out and snapped, causing the baby wyvern to come crashing down right onto Duke's face, waking him from his nap. The baby wyvern rolled off of Duke's face and onto the floor as Duke quickly sat up, causing his still fractured ribs a great deal of pain.
He yelped in pain, and then angrily yelled, "WHO THE FUCK JUST HIT ME IN THE FACE?!"
Looking around the room, he saw a small hole in the floor, caused by the explosion from earlier, and Aiko wobbling around in attempts to find the wyvern.
"AIKO! WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?! JUN IS GOING TO KILL US WHEN SHE SEES..."
Before Duke could finish his statement, the door had opened. There stood Jun, in complete awe at the destruction caused by her two furry little babies. She saw Aiko wobbling around, and the baby Narga in Duke's pile of armor, holding the chewed up steak in its mouth. Then she saw her brother clenching his injured ribs, his face all red from yelling, and covered in the curtains from the window by his bed. Now, in most cases, Jun would flip out if she came home to this. However, she was fairly intoxicated, and couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, YOU GUYS ARE A FREAKING MESS!"
She shook her head and continued to laugh as she walked in and closed the door behind her. Duke couldn't believe it. She was obviously drunk, and somehow found this mess absolutely hysterical. He breathed a sigh of relief as Jun continued laughing and walked into her room and closed the door behind her. They were all safe for the moment, though the next issue came to mind as Duke looked around the room.
Thinking out loud, he then asked to no one in particular, "Great, now who the hell is going to clean all of this up?!"
Shaking his head, he breathed a heavy sigh as he got out of his bed and stood up.
"Well, guess I better get started," Duke said to himself, as he walked into the kitchen to retrieve the broom.
Looking at the mess again he sighed deeply once more.
"This is going to be a long fucking day..."
