Description

Eeko heard the creak of a door and the pitter patter of paws as Allen entered the room. They looked up to see the kit standing quietly next to them, a bundle of fabric in his arms. "That's a lovely yellow, Allen," Eeko said gently, smiling down at him. "Did Mama Nana help you find it?"

Allen nodded, staying silent.

Eeko patted him gently on the head, their eyes lingering on the scar running over his left eye. While he had started talking a bit after Monday finished treating his wound, Allen was still closed off to everyone except his fellow kit, Kanda. However, while Kanda was very protective of the younger kit, his cold demeanor wasn't exactly helping Allen open up. Nana proposed that Eeko help Allen build a Vessel so he had a little friend. Having a soft listener around may help the kit come out of his shell. Eeko hoped their wife was right. Young kits, especially sensitive ones like Allen, always made them a little nervous.

Allen then started to move under Eeko's paw, startling the folk out of their thoughts. They removed their paw and watched as Allen begin to unravel the bundle of fabric in his arms. They winced a bit as the majority of it was deposited unceremoniously onto the floor. "Allen, dear, what are you-"

Allen then found the end of the roll and grabbed it, holding it high above his head and standing on his tip toes for Eeko to see what was on the fabric. "Baba Eeko," he asked in a soft voice, "May I have this on my Vessel?"

Eeko reached out with a paw towards a wobbly cut cloth pattern that was crudely sewn into the fabric. With the other paw, they rubbed their chin thoughtfully. "I think I can do that, dear. Did you sew this?"

Allen nodded, a very small smile on his face.

Eeko smiled gently back. "Well you did a very good job, but is it alright if I made my own version for the Vessel? The magic can be a bit tricky, you see."

Allen looked thoughtful for a moment, then nodded again.

"Thank you, Allen." Eeko carefully took the fabric from the kit's paws and laid it on the table. They reached over to the side and grabbed a seam ripper before getting to work on removing the stitches from around the pattern. They paused, looking at it. "If you don't mind me saying, dear, this symbol is quite specific. Is there something special about it?"

They were met with silence. Eeko looked over to see Allen's expression now vacant, his eyes staring both a million miles away and at nothing at all. Slight panic gripped Eeko's throat. Monday had warned the Den Mothers that Allen still had a lot of psychological trauma from before he and Kanda were found in the forest. The emotional scars showed with extremes: Bursts of emotion, and sudden periods of no emotion at all. This appeared to be the latter.

"I-it's okay, dear," Eeko said as reassuringly as they could. "Never mind about that. What sort of shape did you want for your Vessel's head?"

Allen's face brightened back up as he returned to the present. "Round," he said simply.

"Alright, round it is! How about you sketch the sort of shape you'd like so I have a reference?" Eeko grabbed a few papers from the side and a stray pencil before handing them over to the kit.

Allen nodded, his smile returning as he took the art supplies and plopped down on the ground to begin drawing.

Eeko sighed in relief in having avoided further damage to the young kit's psyche. They looked at the strange pattern on the table, running a paw over the stitches. Their smile fell as their heart ached.

One day, they hoped Allen would be healed from whatever happened to him before he came to the Den.
