Description
Sea of memory, sea of memorywind and water in my dreams
passing through my fingers
passing through my brain
fragile sand castle on my shore
Once again I’m taking you back to my little rocky island with a winter shot. This was actually captured on December 1st, on one of these afternoons where upon leaving work I decided to make a small detour and enjoy the sunset in one of the beaches around there. And this little port is one of my most favorite places, it’s the same place where Under the Red and Exit Music where made.
It is usually very quiet and lonely there during winter but on that particular day I wasn’t alone. Short after I had set everything up, taken a few test shots and settled down (very awkwardly and uncomfortably so, since I was sitting on the large middle rock as if I was riding on the back of a crocodile) I heard a burst of chattering voices and saw a bunch of my students taking pictures of the sunset using their mobile phones! I’m normally glad to see those little devils but I had just started counting the seconds of the exposure in my head (no, didn’t own a stopwatch back then) and the last thing I wanted was a distraction so I hoped they wouldn’t see me. Well, they did and one of them decided to come and say “Hi”
When I replied with an enthusiastic “One thousand forty six –Hello Miki!- one thousand forty seven…” he immediately understood what was going on (well, I had recently told them the story about a shot that came out pure white when I had to answer my mobile phone right in the middle of the exposure) and decided to make me lose counting by making up a sentence so full of numbers and so cleverly made I couldn’t but admire him! I tried to shut him up but I guess that you can’t terrify someone by telling him “one thousand ninety eight Miki!” no matter how threateningly you utter it!
Surprisingly enough I managed to keep track of the seconds and this is the outcome.
Hope you enjoy your visit here!

thank you very much Guillermo!
When I could speak again I threatened him that if the exposure came out wrong I'd lower his mark in the next semester!
He stayed with me waiting for the long exposure noise reduction feature of my camera to stop (that took 3 minutes!) pretending to be anxious about his mark. When he saw the result he gave me a sly look and told me Ï think my mark is safe, right?"

great shot Maria, 160 seconds exposure, heh i need to buy a remote, thats for sure
and i really know what you mean, with people around you when i was at the seaside two weeks ago, i was counting in my head too lol cause i was half-holding my tripod (its a cheap plastic one) and hmm the wind was pretty strong and the camera a bit close to the sea, so i was a bit scared to not lose my camera and also paid attention to not move the tripod
lol i guess i need a new one too, anyway some people passing by stopped and asked, ah you-re making a small video ?

just beautiful, as expected ^^
how many seconds was that? I tried some long-exposure photo but If I go around 10-15secs, the photo is all washed out

Thank you very much Minh!
This one was 160 seconds! You have to use Neutral Density filters if you want to take long exposure shots. Those filters reduce the light that passes through and so you can expose longer.

Aww, you'll fall in love with it, I'm sure!
Took me a really long time to stop taking such loooong exposure shots and cut them down to 30secs max!

Kernow-Photography In reply to justeline [2009-07-08 19:26:00 +0000 UTC]
Yeh i'm sure I will. I guess you compose the shot first then put the filter as you can't see allot through it. sorry if i'm sounding thick

justeline In reply to Kernow-Photography [2009-07-09 08:25:40 +0000 UTC]
Yes, that exactly is the case with the heavy ND filters. If you are using the ND8 (that's a 3 stop) you can see and compose pretty well through it though.
And you're not sounding thick at all!
