Yeah, several have mentioned to me that a combat style based around this guy's hair would be cool. I'll have to try to think of something along those lines.

With all the positive feedback, I'm thinking more and more of developing a retro platformer where the elasticity of this character's hair is involved in the core game mechanics.

Though in a way, that style looks better, but, the simple style of the sprite we're talking on/about looks good too.

The other one's imitating the style of SNK fighting games on the Neo Geo Pocket, so I can't claim that particular style of pixel art as my own, but the character design is all mine.

Yeah, I didn't know it would come out quite so rubbery when I tried out the animation technique I had read about, but I like the results.

Yeah, if it's pomade, it's some sort of miracle pomade that refuses to let a style lose its shape no matter happens.

I think over time Deacon is becoming one of my favorite characters you've shown off!

I'm actually developing this design into a character separate from Deacon. Deacon's got the chrome helmet hair going on, and guy's got a longer, heart-shaped pomp that I color pink in other versions.
The concept I've got for this one is that he used to be a more archetypal delinquent complete with a shiny black pompadour, but got a crush on a near-sighted nerd who couldn't tell him apart from the school bullies, so he changed his image to one that would make him stand out from every other delinquent. It's a silly story, but the design itself is comical, so it's a good fit.

I haven't seen that one, but I figure there are 1950's greasers with pompadours as well as Japanese school delinquents with similar styles, and I may as well cover both in some form.

I'm sure all these things will line up! It's really interesting using styles that are plays back & forth between cultures slowly creating it's own thing.
Side-note: Cromartie is totally worth a watch for some wild laughs.
