Axalot was created over a decade and a half ago when I was still in elementary school, starting out as doodles on my homework.
It has had many names since then (Samsiren, Newtmander, Sirender)
Major influences were Quagsire and fake Lickitung evolutions
There was a middle stage between Axalitl and Axalot that was on all 4 legs and didn't have the hair down the middle.
