It's been observed that one of the reasons minorities aren't depicted commonly in children's illustration is that most of the illustrators are white.  We draw what we see and if we live around mostly white people, that's what we'll tend to draw without even meaning to.  

Well, I can't help that I'm white, but I can make an effort to include non-white characters in my illustrations.   I do worry that I'll get things wrong because I barely know any minorities because of where I live.  (There just aren't very many here.)  But, I figure, so long as I depict everyone as normal people doing normal things and stay away from topics I am aware that I know nothing about I should be relatively safe.  

I do know that hair can be a big pain in the butt for black people.  So, since the series included a struggling-with-her-hair panel, I figured a black or mixed-race girl would fit pretty well.  The alternative would be to make her an curly-headed Irish girl, but I've seen a lot of those lately.  I wanted to be different.

Aw, what a lovely little girl she is.    You have some nice CGI work.  

Thank you, I'm glad you liked this little getting-ready-in-the-morning girl.  She was fun to draw.  I kinda want to know what happens next too.  

My kids and I talked it out one day, and we think that the monster gets jealous that he never gets to go to school.  So, one day he hops into her schoolbag, getting a ride to school and exploring everything there while trying not to be seen.
