Description
Hey guys! I kinda died while making this. I haven't done proper line work in aaages and this hit me like a truck. Then the pose, the background... Holy shit. But i'm pretty happy with how it turned out, it's nice to do something different for a change. Who would have thought i'd get used to digital painting. I have been doing lined work since i started digital art, and started painting maybe just 2 or 3 years ago. Not sure if i'll continue with this style though. Now i'm gonna rant about Gorillaz a bit, because no one i know in real life gives a shit and i don't wanna bother them, so i'll just dump it all here. You don't need to read this, it doesn't have much to do with the drawing itself. warning: it's hella long
I started listening to them again recently, after maybe a year or so. I'll have to be honest, i wasn't stoked when Humanz came out. They blew it out of proportion, and i get it. It was their big comeback after what, 7 years? But then they release an album where half of the songs aren't even by them (shh i know they are, but when i don't hear Damon Albarn singing at least one verse, i don't honestly see it as Gorillaz. For instance i love Strobelite, but come on, i would never recognize it as a Gorillaz song if i heard it on the radio). And again, i get that. They wanted to experiment. And that's okay, but come on. You can't just bring in a bunch of artists, feature Damon's singing for one line and call it Gorillaz. And again, i know, it's kinda what they're about, experimentation and breaking down genre. They have done it before, and it worked well. But in my honest opinion, they went a liiitlte overboard with the collaborations. I also know a lot of people complained that the album was too political, and i honestly don't have a problem with that, but it's just not my cup of tea. Then, the two music videos they released; i really liked the animation they did for Saturnz Barz (thought it was a bit lazy at times). Strobelite was cute, though the 3D models look so awkward, especially 2-D (something just doesn't look right on him, i can't put my finger on it but i think that's just me). And the interviews. My god, the interviews. Don't get me wrong, they're great, i especially love it when Murdoc's eye just fucking shoots in a random direction, but they could've came up with something simpler. I can't imagine how much it cost them to make the 3D models and have them work somewhat properly. So, with al of this in mind, imagine my surprise when i saw the music video for Humility. I knew they were dropping a new album, but i wasn't that excited since i thought it would have a fuckton collaborations like Humanz. Then i saw the interview where Damon said that there won't be any collaborations, and i was pleasantly surprised. Humility came out the day after that, and let me tell you, i was not expecting it AT ALL. I started watching it, and i lost my shit hahahha. But seriously, it's so simple, and it works so well . The animation is beautiful, and i can tell that they put a lot of love in every single frame. It shows that they didn't spare a single dime for it, and It felt like the old Gorillaz. All the characters look on point, and i kinda like Ace, though no one can replace Murdoc. I also loved the song, i think that goes without saying. All in all, i'm really excited for the album. Oh and i also love the new art they've been releasing, but Jamie's work has never been anything but amazing, so yea. I guess that's all i have to say. Sorry for the long ass rant, i just have a lot of feelings

this is adorable!! honestly I loved Humanz but I can agree with you about not recognizing the songs without Damon's voice as Gorillaz. and I had the same reaction to the Humility music video! haha but seriously, you perfectly captured 2D's happiness here <3

I 100% agree with the Humanz stuff. It was so out of left field in a bad way. Plastic Beach was so different from the other two albums but it never felt like it wasn't Gorillaz it the good kind of different. I never knew what I didn't like about Humanz and you've described it perfectly; i wouldn't know it was a Gorillaz song if I heard it. But hey to be honest Plastic Beach was my favourite and it was going to be hard for them to clap back strong after Plastic Beach/a 7 year hiatus, we forgive and forget.

Amazing art! And yesss, I got the same feel from the new video. It was awesome to see the old art style again. Humanz had some great music but as you said, it just didn't feel like Gorillaz. Saturnz Bars and Andromeda were probably the only ones that reminded me of their older work (not that everything they produce has to be like their original albums, but their unique style and Damon's voice are what makes the band great so great). Really hype for the now now, hopefully it lives up to expectations.

Thanks! Yeah, i'm pretty hyped for the now now as well, but i won't be disappointed if it doesn't turn out to be spectacular. I'll be happy as long as it sounds like Gorillaz
