You don't have too. Ubuntu installs as a second operating system if Windows is already there. After you install it, you get to choose which OS you want to use every time you boot up (and you simply reboot if you want to switch which one you're using).
And Ubuntu can read your files on your Vista section (but, alas, the other way 'round can't be done).
Even if you don't plan on using it, I recommend you download and burn the CD. It comes in handy if Windows runs in to problems and you need to get back to work quickly (since you can boot from it).

Try out Ubuntu. As of release 8.04 (April 2008) you can install it from within Windows.
Alternatively, you can boot from the CD and install nothing until you're ready.

yes you can use gaim or kopete but the best one for MSN is aMSN.
