Description
So I have a friend who's graduating that loves wolves. When I presented this gift to her, she loved it, which is great. That is to say, not for sale, basically.
I did have a lot of fun making this lil' guy... he's got a wire armature, and a posable mouth + tongue.
I found out something new about my camera when I took his photos, so they're better quality than some of the ones I've taken previously. Woot.
What else? Oh: thank you Zoobooks for already-handy reference (but darn you for sending me the same issue twice, my mom got mad and cancelled our subscription...)

This creation was made with a type of crafting called needle felting. Basically what happens is I take a bunch of loose (i.e. roving) wool and jab it with a needle (many, many times). The wool bonds to itself, slowly getting firmer and firmer. Eventually, it's firm enough to stand by itself in a sculpture-like way. By adding more roving wool, I can sculpt a creature or a person or whatever out of the wool.
Needlefelting is a relatively new craft, having only been invented 30 years or so ago. It's similar to the process of wet felting, but instead of using water, needles are used.
My needlefelt creations almost always include a wire base, so they are extremely posable, and I find the freedom of sculpting and the resulting plushness to be everything I could have asked for in a medium.
I happily take commissions, and my prices range from 20 and up, depending on the complexity but mainly on the size.

I have wire armatures inside the majority of my needlefelt pieces.

What kind of wire do you use? I'm just starting to experiment with bases for needle felting and used pipe cleaners, but I wasn't sure if there was a better wire to work with >w<;

I buy wire, the sort jewellers would use, at 20 or 22 gauge, and just sort of wrap a wire skeleton out of that for my smaller ones. For bigger armatures I use 17 gauge, currently. I've got, like, 1/4 mile of 17 gauge wire. It weighs more than a small dog. It makes me happy. :,D

More....than a small dog!? Jeez! xD You, madame, are crazy~ Everything I do is small scale, I don't have to the patience to felt larger critters. I applaud you!

But being crazy is the beeestest eeeever. It's the only way to live~
Why thank you. I think I'm just too lazy to figure out sewing patterns. So I just felt large instead. |D

Yeah, I'm proud of him. He looks a little wonky sometimes because I completely messed up with the wire armature, but he's so cute I forgive myself for it.

k-times-two In reply to Lunekat [2011-06-01 16:27:38 +0000 UTC]
It depends on what I'm buying. Needles I buy bulk online,
wool I buy at a local fiber arts store, wire I buy at crafts outlets.

Oh your so lucky you have a store that sells wool! I had to buy mine when I was on holiday in paris, and I haven't found any since!

Yeah, I am. Though, Decadent Fibers was the first store I bought wool from--they're online, with a lot of good assortments and stuff, though they take a while to ship.

Oh, cool! I'll look them up ^^ Online isnt bad, but shipping to ireland is always pricy! Buying fabric like minky is a nightmare

Yeah, that's gotta be problematic. The store I go to gets a lot of their wool from Holland, and apparently customs is hellish. Shipments take a lot longer than the need to because of the wool... You'll probably want to look into customs and stuff before buying any wool.

He's beautiful! I absolutely love the posable mouth and tongue, I don't think I've seen a posable tongue on a plushie yet!

Hehe, well, it's a lot easier to do with needlefelt than with the traditional plushie's needle-and-thread.
And thank you very much for the compliment and the watch.
