Personality
Hermes is cold and callous towards almost everyone. He uses his gruff demeanor as a defense mechanism to keep strangers away since he has a hard time trusting people and finds socializing to be a nuisance. However, after some patience, one could gradually get the Sparrow to open up to them.
However, don't expect him to start taking risks and try new things just as easily since he's easily spooked and awfully stubborn.
History:
Hermes has 2 older siblings- one boy and one girl. Of the three of them, he'd always been the most introverted and quiet.
As all birds must, Hermes left his parents' nest and went to live on his own at the age of 19- a bit later than other birds, but better late than never. He sought out a quiet looking town and Animal Village was the result of one painstakingly long search so as to ensure he found the perfect, safest location. Adjusting to living on his on took some time, and he still isn't very accustom to his new home, but he has set up a comfortable living situation for himself and doesn't see a need to venture out much anyway.
His intense fear of the outdoors springs from a traumatic experience when he was younger involving a fall from a tree, a broken wing, and some bees. It doesn't help that his parents are overprotective of him, seeing as how he is their youngest. As a result, his introverted nature has become more intense and he spends most of his time locked up indoors, away from anything that could possibly be considered dangerous. However, despite his fear, Hermes loves hearing about exciting adventures and therefore reads all the adventure novels he can find.
Hermes also has a soft spot for flowers since their one of the few things found in nature that doesn't pose some immediate threat to him. His job Librarian is perfect since he can spend the day inside, living vicariously through his books with very little contact with other people.
Other
Hermes takes his job very seriously, so don't mess up his books or his library!
He tries to keep his love for adventure novels a secret
He lives close by the library and does his shopping once every week, early in the morning when not a lot of people are around.
if he could muster up the courage, Hermes would really love to visit a tropical island.

AHhahahahah exactly!
Hermes lifted his wings to his head defensively. Sure... maybe it was on the big side, but it wasnt that large. He resisted the urge to stick out his tongue but he did give his eyes and exaggerated roll. Okay Miss Edamame Head, I don't have time for your ridiculous and blatantly false insults- I have a job to do. Now why don't you go return to playing in your dirt." He said with an overly-pompous tone.

Fai tsked and shook her head, a smirk pulling her lips away from her teeth for a rare moment. "Aww, the little librarian doesn't know where the fruit he eats comes from. I plant things and produce edibles. The best you can do with dirt is dig up a few worms for dinner before having to go sterilize your hands, flappy mouth," she ranted back, surprised at her own lengthy retort. "If you ever want a patron to actually check out some books, keep that beak closed for a minute..." Heading out into the afternoon with a neutral expression, she added, "Put a copy of Crime and Punishment on reserve, for pickup next monday. Don't be here then if you want to avoid my 'edamame head'."

LOL round 1!~
Hermes lifted his beak rather defiantly as she began rattling off her retort. The mention of digging up worms made him cringe- insects and dirt, not that was an unappealing image to have stuck in your head. It was when she began to take her leave that he finally resolved himself to let this argument go for anther time- as angry as he was, he was not accustom to actually having someone challenge his tartness. Animal Village was made up of many bubbly people with blindingly bright and amiable smiles- but this "edamame head" was a whole new persona. As she walked out the door, he spoke up with a "Good Day Miss Edmame-" condescension seeping through his voice, "And good riddance."

The library was silent, as it usually was. The occasional footstep could be heard here or there or the flitter of turning pages, but one could still hear a pin drop. Giggling echoed throughout the many shelves, but silenced prevailed once Hermes would look up from a book. Creaking was added to the giggling until both got very loud. Then a shout pierced the silence "TIMBER!" Suddenly a bookshelf tipped and sent Nelly and a tidal wave of books careening down the isle towards Hermes. Nelly stood atop a large book and seemed to be book surfing.

Hermes sat comfortably behind his desk. A small cup of warm tea left a sweet aroma lingering in the air as the sparrow allowed himself to indulge in a bit of reading since the library was fairly empty. With his favorite adventure novel sitting in his lap, Hermes felt utterly blissful- well almost. Every so often, a soft but irritatingly audible giggle interrupted his thoughts and had him sending a perturbed glare around the room. Whoever it was must have stumbled across the comic section or something and while it was an annoyance, Hermes could hardly reprimand the perpetrator for giggling. Even if it was getting louder..... TIMBER! Hermes hardly knew what happened. There was yelling and a loud bang as books began falling everywhere. Instinctively, he ducked under his desk with wings settling protectively on top of his head while the clattering slowly began to die down. Quietness settled over the library once more and after a few seconds, Hermes dared to peek out over the top of his desk. His eyes immediately settle on the young lady... who was standing on top of his precious books. While he wanted more than anything to reprimand the wild young woman for her tyranny, he realized that she could be quite dangerous. After all, looks are deceiving and it wouldn't be weird for him to suspect that she had just tried to take him out with a deadly bookshelf assault. Still, he couldn't hide forever. Clearing his throat, Hermes pulled himself up from the ground and a cold look settled over his features. "Miss. What is the meaning of this!? I demand an explanation- ah, hey! and stop standing on those books." Despite his trepidation over dealing with the dangerous miss, he had his duty as head librarian to protect the texts and he managed to speak sternly without a quiver in his voice.

Nelly continued to laugh and she grinned down at him from atop the mountain of books. "aw come one, feathers, I was just having a little fun!" She brushed a bit of hair from her face. "it was getting pretty dull in here." She slid down the mountain so as to get a better look at the librarian. "I was gunna clean it up anyway." She batted her lashes and made a puppy dog face "what, are you gunna report me to the mayor? its not like anyone got hurt."

"Miss, I'm not sure what your definition of fun is but I don't consider vandalism to be a proper past time." His tone was icy to match his cold stare and he held his wings behind his back. What a peculiar woman! To think she considered ruining his library- obstructing his peace of all things- to be fun!? Hermes managed to quell some of the growing anger within him. He blinked once as she batted her lashes and didn't miss a beat in replying to her words. "No but someone could have gotten hurt-" aka, he could have and what a travesty that would have been. "And I very much expect you to help clean this mess up or I will go straight to the town hall." He threatened. It was a bluff though. Hermes could barely walk much further than the library let alone make the trek all the way to town hall. If anything, he'd have to wait and hope the Merry Mayor stopped by if he really wanted to report the young woman.
Hermes huffed and picked up a few books. "That shelf needs to be set upright again." He nodded towards the knocked over piece of furniture that would most likely be too risky for Hermes to try and lift on his own.

Juile huffed. "well, fine mr. grumpy." She was not in the mood to be lectured by May AGAIN this week. "but... eh... you probably want to stand back.... and maybe wear a helmet..." She turned towards the mess and took a deep breath. She'd never tried to use a spell on something so big before. She pulled some chalk out from her pocket then got to work. She quickly drew up a circle big enough for only her to stand in. It was filled with lines and symbols around her feet. She stood again and glanced back at Hermes. She stuck an arm strait out from her side and the circle glowed. The large shelf began to creak and groan then lifted off the ground completely. She'd closed her eyes and was sweating a little. She was muttering some unknown language to her self.

As Hermes collected a few more of the spilled tomes he didn't notice how the young woman had begun drawing on the floor. When he looked up and found the circle that she'd scrawled he stifled an angry chirp. "Miss! I told you to clean up and you draw on my floor-" His tirade was cut short shen she held out an arm and suddenly a soft aura of light appeared. The sparrow watched in both fear and amazement as the shelf was slowly lifted. Instinctively, Hermes began backing up. Had he made her angry- angry enough to the point where she was going to crush him with the bookshelf?!
He glanced around for something to defend himself with but the nearest thing he could find was his small chair. Hermes lifted the seat in front of him, almost like a shield and watched as the woman continued mumbling.
"N-Now don't get any funny ideas... miss." He chirped as his hard defenses slowly began to crumble in the face of the floating shelf.

Nelly just seemed to tense up more as she continued the spell. Her hand shook a bit and she could feel herself losing control of the spell. The light got brighter and more intense to the point where onlookers would have a difficult time seeing her. Her hair also started to float with the shelf. Her eyes glowed with the same intensity as the markings below her feet. She truly was a sight to see.
The shelf paused a moment in the air, then suddenly shot back to its original place in the library. Time had seemed to reverse as the books slid back the way they'd fallen and into the shelf in neat rows. Not a book was out of place.
The light finally faded and they spell was done. There wasn't a sign that the shelf had fallen. Nelly grinned to herself, for she had feared the spell would have backfired like so many others had. She stumbled and had to lean on a shelf close to her. She felt feint like she was going to be sick. "See.... p-peice of cake..."

The woman seemed stuck in a trance as her lips continued to relay her enchanting words. Hermes kept the chair hoisted in front of himself and as the light began to burn brighter and brighter, he found himself squinting. Before he finally turned his strained eyes away, the shelf shot upright and the scattered books flew back to their proper places on the shelf. Hermes lowered the chair an watched hile his beak hung half-open.
She didn't crush him after all.
The blonde seemed satisfied with her work as a small smile graced her lips, but the magic seemed to have drained her as she used a nearby shelf to support her upper body. The sparrow furrowed a brow but his reactions felt delayed since his mind as still trying to process the scene before him. His heart that had been drumming quickly was finally returning to a normal pace and his gaze shifted from the girl, to the shelf, to the thermos on his desk.
Quickly, Hermes procured a small foam cup from the stash he kept at his station and poured the warm contents of his thermos inside. The smell of green tea wafted into the air as he walked the cup over. He kept a wide distance between the tow of them and stretched his wings out.
"Here. I don't need you passing out right now." Hermes used his wing to gesture at a chair next. "You should take a seat."
He said as he refrained from thanking her for fixing the shelf- after all, it was her mess to begin with.

Nelly, too, seemed to be still processing what had just happened. Her previous spells almost always ended in disaster and even bodily harm. What was it that made this particular enchantment work? The girl was without an answer. After a moment of pondering she merely shrugged it off as mere luck.
She didn't hear Hermes at first. Her ear rung a bit and her reaction time was slowed quite a bit. "hmm? oh, thanks..." She murmured and flopped down into the chair. Just in time too. She had feared she would just collapse there. She took the tea shakily and sipped it. After a moment of silence she looked up at the owl. "so... your the librarian guy?" She grinned, but it was a tired grin.

Hermes remained standing nearby, but not too close, and he held his wings behind his back as the girl took a languid sip of the tea.
His composure was completely regained now and he met her question with a bored expression.
"Hermes. I am the head librarian here." He blinked and glanced back at the shelf that she'd fixed.
"From what I just witnessed, I'd say there's more to you than simply being a tyrannical destroyer of peace as well. Your name and occupation?"
His gaze had slid back over to the blonde and he waited for a reply.

Nelly had never seen someone so stern and frankly as grumpy as this owl. The man was like some stoic swan or something. She sat up a little more, her strength returning to her. "Nelly, this towns' residential witch." She grinned into the cup and took another swig of the bitter brew. She wiggled her toes. It was a tad chilly in the room, but she liked having her feet cold. She glanced around, finally taking in her surroundings. There were a LOT of books here.

He small shiver ran through his body as she confirmed her witch title. Trus, it was interesting- like something from one of his favorite adventure novels- but fantastical and exciting things were always more interesting in the context of a book where they couldn't harm you.
He took a small step back. "Then, Miss Nelly, let me now ask what brings you to the Animal Village library this morning?"

"And so you knocked over a bookshelf. Hm." was his quick riposte but Hermes nodded and held out a wing for the cup so he could dispose of it.
"We keep the older tomes in the back- I'll escort you." He volunteered since he didn't wish to risk the girl getting lost once more and making another mess.
Hermes turned and began walking quickly past the aisles of bookshelves. He glanced back momentarily to make sure Nelly was keeping up before arriving at the designated section of older books. The shelf that held the books- most of which were rather tattered or worn from age- was smaller than the others since the library didn't have as many, but there was still a moderately wide variety of texts to choose from.
The sparrow took a step back and gestured to the selection. "Here we are. Please be careful- they're old and delicate and they won't handle rough treatment well." He warned her while looking at the blonde with a stern gaze.

"actually, I saw a spider so i tried to kill the little devil and.... well you know that part." She laughed.
Nelly'd already risen from the chair when they started for the older section. She blinked as they got further and further into the labyrinth of shelfs. "just how many books do you people have?" She was pretty impressed with the collection. She had to jog after her escort a number of times to catch up after getting distracted by various things in the library.
Once the pair arrived at their destination, Nelly was completely distracted. She was still looking around when Hermes spoke. "hm..? oh, yeah, the books." She zipped over to the shelf and starting sifting through its contents, but gently so as not to receive another scolding.

Somehow Hermes had trouble believing the spider thing, but if that were truly the case, then he would actually be very grateful for the knocked over shelf since he detested bugs.
When she asked about the number of books Hermes replied with a simple, "A lot." but didn't bother to elaborate although he had a rough estimate on exactly how many there were in his mind.
The girl wasted no time in scanning the shelf and Hermes supervised from the sidelines. Little time had passed but he grew impatient and cleared his throat before holding out a wing. "Perhaps I might help again. Are you looking for books pertaining to a specific subject matter?" he inquired and hoped that he might hurry up this process. After all, The quicker he could assist her, the quicker she might leave and be out of his feathers.

"wow, you really have this library down to a science, don't you?" She said while reaching towards a higher shelf. The more books she set aside the more her frustration grew. So many old books and she couldn't find a simple magicians manual. She scoffed and crossed her arms to refrain from lashing out in anger in some way.
She turned from the shelf, discouraged. "eh... do you have any spell books? preferably ones on curses and hexes?" She rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. Her hope was already running out that this town had what she needed.

Hermes had expected her to ask for a book of that nature and he almost regretted asking.
"Well..." He started and sighed. "We do have one that I know of." He finally admitted.
"It's speculated to be about two centuries old, and the condition is very poor but..." Hermes glanced at Nelly. The reason the book wasn't kept with the others wasn't simply because of the terrible state, but the contents were certainly questionable. After thinking over it thoroughly, he had decided to store the book away to prevent the youthful visitors from happening upon it and getting bad ideas. However, as a public library, he really had no right to withhold the book from patrons if it were specially requested. While it was at least good to know that the person requesting this hex book was someone who's profession dealt with all things curse-like and witchy in nature rather than an ignorant young person, he wasn't so sure how he felt about this wild woman having her hands on it either.
"Come with me Miss." He said before staking out of the aisle and back towards his desk. He pulled open one of the oak drawers and grabbed a small copper key. Hermes then used the key to unlock another one of the many drawers to his desk and upon pulling it open, he revealed a very large, worn purple book. It was wrapped in a protective plastic casing and there was no title- only the depiction of a small crescent moon. Hermes looked down at it for a minute as if her were still stuck in some internal struggle before unwrapping the text and handing it over. "I believe this is what you were looking for."

She jogged after him. Her spirits were lifted a tad in hearing there was another not currently on the shelf. When they got to the Owl's desk and he revealed the large book her shoulders sagged. "gods and goddesses, this book looks like it went through a war!" Nelly was almost shocked to find the book in such a condition. She held the book out at arm length then dropped it. It did not drop, it stay suspended in air.
She gingerly opened the cover, cringing at the soft crunching noise the binding made. "oh, this will never do..." She muttered then closed the book. She placed her hand over the top. The binding began to bubble and hiss then started to fix itself as if it were skin healing.
"thats better." She grinned at Hermes.

When she suddenly released the book Hermes felt his heart jump into his throat and his wings jolted forward. I knew it! I knew she just wanted to pull a pra- huh... His inner monologue ceased when he noticed the book was floating and in no danger of falling. As the front cover was carefully peeled open, he was almost expecting the whole book to crumble into a pile of dust due to the horrible crackling noise the age-crusted paper was making.
When Nelly placed her hand over the top and the book practically came alive, the sparrow wasn't as quick to jump to the book's rescue as he had a minute ago. Still very wary, he opted to put a bit of faith in the witch instead. And as the binding soothed itself back to impeccable condition, he was glad he had believed in her.
Hermes looked up at the grinning girl with a face that was slightly awe-strucken and his beak was parted to speak.
"Amazing..." He breathed and then quickly shook his head once he realized that was a compliment he had just given. " I-I mean...good work..." Quickly, his brain flipped through all the other books that could use a good repair....
