Since Tiago’s mother disappeared, Yukiko and Tiago found asylum in Konoha. In exchange Yukiko offered to contribute to society by working as soon as they’ll turn 10, which they did. Yukiko works as a semesters in a workshop and Tiago as a mail delivery boy. They both work in the morning before school, which makes them rise early! They do not brag about it at school, being low-key embarassed and concerned to keep their cool image. Indeed despite living in the same social housing as Naruto, they fit in very well. They’re both very popular, Yukiko even befriended older girls like Ino. At the academy they’re the cool kids! They’re part of team 18 with Satoru-sensei, who is pretty much a PE teacher. At first he didn’t believe at all in his team of under-dogs. Tiago and Yukiko tend to fall asleep in class a lot! They were not exactly the best students. Yukiko being quite weak in ninjutsu… He did not exactly believe in her, but he was blown away by her maturity and understood what a support she is in the team. He was surprised himself when he recommended them for the chuunin exam. But he thought they were capable.

Yukiko met Gaara during the retake of the chuunin exam, she gave him the Earth parchment willingly, assuming she was out, her team having broken up under pressure.
If the fight with Naruto was the inciting incident for Gaara to question himself about changing, Yukiko was the push he needed to commit to it.
The two bonded over their dysfunctional families and traumas. She did not excuse his bad actions, but redemption was possible, and maybe the people he hurt would forgive him. Yukiko was very supportive and spontaneous towards him. But Gaara knew no other way of communication than being agressive. And Yukiko made it clear that she would not tolerate it and made him realize he was hurting others (Including what he did to Lee). He also realized he didn’t like hurting her. So he showed her he was ready to change and question himself (hence why the change of outfit).
