Gaara and Yukiko met when Gaara and the Naruto gen (except well Naruto and Sasuke who were not in Konoha) re passed their chuunin exam. They are around 13, but Yuki is a bit younger she is 11 only. However the age difference doesn’t show at all as she acts more mature than her older sister, Ayame 7 years older than her. She always refused to give her name because she knows the bad reputation the Nakamura clan has around the world. She knows some would kill only for her name. So she used the fact Choji nicknamed her « Yuki Onna » « Yuki » for short, as a nickname. But Gaara wasn’t really using it, he understood the fact she wanted to keep her name low-key seeing Ayame’s hair he immediately guessed they were Nakamuras.
Yukiko was really caring towards Gaara, and did not seem judgmental at all of his past. She believed in him and his ability to be a better person. Her speech echoed Naruto’s. She was coming to him with simplicity, never forcing him to talk, finding some other ways to communicate with him without crossing his boundaries. However, she still reminded him all the wrong he did and the consequences of his actions. « Always forgive but never forget. » that’s her motto. He then started acknowledging other people’s feeling and the importance of their lives.

She was making steps towards him and he could feel it, but at first its his pride that led him to reject her and act purposely rude to her. Then she started to distance herself and he came back to her using her lack of control of her jutsu as an excuse, showing her the basic of chakra control. She accepted it gladly. She showed herself very caring and respectful towards him, she had a lot of esteem for him when he was still a monster in the eyes of everyone. Including his siblings, who were glad to seem him having some social interactions. She seem to appease him. They noticed he was less agressive and cold after seeing her. They saw him talking so much more words than he usually does and even smiling slightly. This stranger girl, this smiling little albino from Iron who’s name they didn’t know, seem to be the person he needed at this moment in his life, and they were just happy she was there. Even if Temari was a bit mistrustful at first, and really judgmental.

Their relationship was kinda rocky still as they both were clumsy, and discovering new feelings he wasn’t ready to accept at the moment. It resulted in a fight one day. Even though she wasn’t fighting back. Just letting him unleash all his violence. « If it can help you feel better. But you’ll see you’ll only feel more lonely once you’ll kill me. » And he did feel terribly bad when he almost lost her.

After this bad incident, Gaara decided to try to apologize to her by coming to her with his umbrella, to keep her covered. His clothes had changed from his black outfit to a dark red one. He was willing to make efforts, to really change, because he understood hurting her did not make him feel better. And at this moment she could feel he was willing to make the effort, and really trying to be the best version of himself so she accepted the apology (and the umbrella) gladly and continued talking to him like if nothing wrong happened. He had understood the consequences of his actions already, no need to insist. She better support him.
When he gave her the umbrella, she started talking about how cool it would be to have a katana inside an umbrella to be able to fight AND to be safe from the sun. It was one of her many crazy ideas, she was very talkative so it was really one idea among many others. But this one he never forgot. And years later, when they were grown up and a stable couple, he gave her the umbrella katana "Airi" (愛莉) so she could protect herself from the sun AND her foes when he wasn't around. She was surprised he remembered that, she thought he wasn't always listening to her. (which would be legit) But he always was paying attention. Because he truly cared. That's what the Airi sword showed her. I illustrated this moment a few months ago, but I feel I gotta redraw it too before posting it here.
