So Kaa clearly has been following Mowgli from the treetops the whole movie, since he knows the man-cub was betrayed by "fair-weather friends" and is using the feelings of betrayal to win the boy's trust and make him susceptible to hypnosis. That's the only way this scene makes any sense! It seems to work, since Mowgli opens his eyes just a bit wider when Kaa says he must trust him.

I always did wonder how he knew all that already, and he uses that quite nicely to try to hypnotize Mowgli. It seems we underestimate Kaa as the second antagonist (which he is).Β

Oh, definitely! I like that Kaa either needs or wants to win the man-cub over before he can begin to hypnotize him properly! The first time he takes advantage of Mowgli already being sleepy (like he tells Bagheera) and the second time he has to appeal to the man-cub's need for friendship. It wouldn't be quite as interesting if he simply had to stare at him to put him under!

Me: *holds up Kaa's coils* Well, these are pretty nice coils you got here. Reallll pretty. I'd be a shame if someone where to say...knot them all up so tight.
