I met Nue about 3 years back, on a particularly stormy night. He sat under the tree in the local park and sobbed.

"Aw, buddy, what's going on?", I inquired.

"Kids these days are only scared of failing TikTok challenges!", he wailed. "Nobody cares about us yōkai anymore!"

"You are a Nue, right?"

Nue nodded hesitantly.

"Well, Nue, know that this is simply not true! I love you yōkai, whichever shape or form you take! Even the creepy monk dude lurking in the toilet, although admittedly he has serious issues."

Nue lifted his head and looked at me with hope.

"Are you serious? In that case... would you take me with you?"

"But of course!", I said, beaming. "You'll fit right in with the rest of the family".

Nue hopped right onto my back and I piggybacked him all the way home. He stayed with me ever since, keeping my bosses and landlords in check.

As for all those people who managed to get on my nerves... let's just say they had a little visit from my buddy and were never seen again. I didn't ask. I *do not* want to know.

Eyyyy, this is my entry for Parororo's Monster Partner Challenge! I had soooo much fun with this. Monkeys are my favourite animals (tied with foxes and cats), so I chose Japanese Nue to be my partner. This monkey-tanuki-tiger-snake hybrid is pretty nasty in the lore, but I took a "Natsume's Book of Friends" approach, and it actually worked like a charm. I *might* turn this into a comic at some point, simply because I love Nue's potential for wreaking havoc in the modern day UK
