Do you know the legend of the Fox Princess?
Otohime-gitsune was the goddess of KyΕ«hirota village (Niigata Prefecture). She was a seer, and only ever advised the villagers without showing herself.
The villagers would approach a mountain the goddess lived on, and ask her questions about the village, their daily lives, or crime perpetrators. Every time, without fail, Otohime would answer their questions, bringing happiness and harmony to KyΕ«hirota.
One day, wild animals destroyed crops planted by one of the farmers. Worried that he will starve in winter, he set up traps deep in the forest, to capture the creatures responsible, and prevent them from damaging the food supply any further.
Soon, he heard a desperate plea for help - it was most certainly Otohime's voice!
The farmer rushed towards the source of the sound - he climbed and climbed, until he reached the place where he set up his traps.
In one of the snares, he saw a huge white-furred fox, the most beautiful one he'd ever seen; but he arrived too late, for Otohime was dead, and her voice was never heard in the region again :<
