Briar bears (or "dreaders" as common folk calls them) are certainly the most terrifying creatures one can encounter in the dark woods of Brachasmagion.

The general consensus in a very few written accounts we possess seems to be that they fall into the same category as demons, and are naturally drawn to locations with high amounts of negative energy.

Dreaders feed on fear and rage, which in itself is enough to frighten most people; add their absolutely massive size of anywhere between 12 and 14 ft and nearly 2,000 lbs, and it's no wonder that even demonologists avoid them.

As dreaders continue to gorge on negative emotions, their bodies start to change - fur rots and falls off the body, revealing bare bones, twisted and broken, yet in no way hindering creatures' movement; claw-like appendages rupture thick skin, twitching and contorting as if they had a life of their own.

In fact, they may.

Only one research paper mentions this, so I am reluctant to treat it as indisputable evidence, but that paper claims that dreaders only function as a host to much more powerful and sinister entity. What - or who - this entity is, however, is never explained.

Also, this particular researcher hung himself with his own hair, so... yeah, not convinced.

Still, may as well choose it for my dissertation - it's way more interesting than potions.
