It was just supposed to be a game. Just a bit of Cat and Mouse. Nobody was supposed to get hurt.

Caemgen had been chasing after VexXxa for as long as he could remember. Practically since the first day he came to Paragon City. He had to, he was a hero and she was a villain. That's how it goes...

They had faced each other many times, it seemed their paths were inexorably interwoven. With each meeting their battles became more and more drawn out, more epic. More fierce. There was a passion to their battles, a heat which could not be explained merely by their being on opposite sides... Caemgen was the stronger, the more powerful of the two. VexXxa the more devious, the more wiley combatant. Their struggles against one another were like dances carried out on a battlefield, each occasionally taking the lead but always with one escaping before the final curtain could drop on their performances...

And then this.

It had seemed like every other fight, every other dance. Caemgen had interrupted yet another of VexXxa's schemes and she took flight before he could lay his hands on her. He gave chase. Their dance carried them across the skies of Paragon City, from Talos to Steel Canyon to Atlas itself. She teased him as they cut through the skies, blowing the occasional kiss back at him, laughing as she let him think he would finally catch her only for her to elude him at the last minute. It was a dance, a game...

She led him through the portal which led to an alternate dimension, an area known as Recluse's Victory. It was a zone of constant battle and war. Caemgen was happy about this, here they could cause no damage to anything except the damage which had already been done. He doubted this was VexXxa's reasoning, she tended not to concern herself with concerns about collateral damage, but it meant one thing less for him to worry about.

But it was a war zone... And they were not the only combatants.

Out of nowhere, they were attacked. The residents of this dimension were so used to battle that it was second nature for them to attack anyone and everyone who was not one of them.

Caemgen stood and fought.

VexXxa took off for higher ground.

She fully knew he could take care of himself and if this distracted him long enough for her to make good her escape, all the better. She didn't mind a little cheating to win the game...

She flew higher and higher, keeping on eye on the red furred hero battling the local residents. She loved to see Caemgen fight.

She should have been keeping an eye out for pursuers.

She smiled as she saw Caemgen dispatch the last of the strangers and start looking around for where she had gotten off to. She knew she had enough of a head start so as to make good her escape so she paused, wanting him to get a last glimpse of her... As he looked up and finally did catch sight of her she waved to him... And then she started to fall.

She had never seen the blast that hit her. Never knew where it came from. The one second she was teasing her constant opponent, the next unconscious and falling.

Caemgen couldn't move. He was stunned by what had happened. For long moments all he could do was watch the villainess fall. Any moment she would catch herself... Any moment now she would flap her wings and retake control of her fall... Any moment now...

But she continued to fall.

Caemgen screamed and beat his own wings against the air. He climbed up into the sky as fast as he could, his wings flapping, his heart beating. He flew towards VexXxa harder than at any time before, pushing himself past his limited.

Closer... closer... closer... until finally he had her. Finally she was in his arms. Finally he had her.

But it shouldn't have been like this... not like this.
