Description
"Hey Nora, I think I'm gettin' the hanga this!"
"Woah, Sash, wait---!"
This is my belated entry for L37! After everyone finished up helping out, they went to the beach to enjoy the ocean. Sasha saw some surf boards, and thought she'd try surfing - and after failing a bunch of a times, she finally started to get the hang of it! But, unfortunately, she and Nora were too distracted at first to realise that the Reshiram was about to get a face full of surfboard and sea water.Β
Etsuji, on the other hand, hasn't really been around the sea too much - and so he tried out some diving, where he could look at both the sea life and other people. It's the perfect beach activity for a ninja!
-------
This is definitely one of the most detailed pieces I've ever done - it took 55 layers, and I completed it from start to finish over the course of three days. Beaches are one of my favourite locations, but I have always struggled with water - so I had to reference a lot of images online in order to better understand it for this picture. I hope my research has paid off, and you can enjoy this piece!

Ah, thank you so much! ;w; They are all definitely having fun - Nora's about to get swamped by a wave, but she'll be fine. Probably.Β

this is sick. Honestly you put heaps of effort into these and it's beautiful. I love all the shades with the waves with different complimenting colours giving eachother some nice vibes Β
Good job dude, I love seeing you better improve yourself throughout these years.Β
Still as the best when I first met you, with your mashed together master art on the bus Β

Thank you so much!
Most of the water was done through using references and what I can remember from all the times I've visited the beach/gone to the reef. I think one of the hardest things to nail about water is the semi-transparent look of it (especially in tropical/reef areas, where it's completely clear near the shore), which I didn't perfectly do here but tried my best to replicate for the underwater portion. If you want me to go more in-depth I can, I'm no expert but I could try to help!

Now I see where the 55 layers went into - that's one of the most well-done water I've seen in digital art. XD
I like how the beach and "trees" in the background look like they've been done in a painterly style. I also particularly like Sasha's figure, she looks rather sturdy/muscular imo which I think suits her. nwn

Aaaa, thank you! I'm really glad you like it ;w; I honestly just did the water based on what I can remember of it from my experiences with it, plus some google searching. I learnt the hard way that it's pretty difficult to get right, since it's semi-transparent and works with light weirdly. I don't think I captured it 100% perfectly in this, but I definitely learnt quite a bit and would love to try it again at some point! I'm also glad you like the painterly style, I tried to do it like that so that the piece didn't look too busy with a bunch of linework (which is more tedious anyway).
I actually took a bit of inspiration from how Holt drew Sasha in our collab, since I felt he captured the 'small but strong' aspect of Sasha really well. It was a little bit of a pain to figure out how to do her anatomy, though, as I've always tended to draw the same body type more or less for most of my characters, even if I don't intend to sometimes. ^^" She wears chainmail and uses a metal pitchfork, it's about time I started learning how to draw her figure properly, because she's not meant to be a complete twig. XD

Yeah, water is tricky to draw. I just half-ass mine most of the time, or find a way to not include it in the pic. XDD //shot
You've got one of the most correct outlooks when it comes to art, I'd have to say. Instead of comparing yourself to other artists, you compare your newest artwork to your earlier ones, which makes for continuous improvement, so kudos to you. It's hard maintaining that mindset in a place chock-full of good artists like dA. owo"
Same here! My characters have different body types and postures in my mind, but when I put pen to paper, they pretty much come out looking the same way. Rami's supposed to be tall and slender, bean is scrawny, Pim is lean, Adel is curvier, Mirai is stocky, and Bugsy is like a crooked twig, but they all come out like... kids. owo"""

Aaaaa thanks! I'm glad the water turned out well ;w; I've always tried to avoid doing water in scenes because it's so hard to pull of right
And you definitely should! I'd love to see some larger pieces from you, and I feel honoured to inspire someone as great as you ;w;
