Description
I think that anyone who has looked or asked about a mobile app for deviantART has received the same, disappointing answer...NO... Apparently deviantART feels that they don't need to go beyond having a very limited, ad filled mobile site. Well, I and many others would like to see an app for both Android and iPhone. To me it only makes sense. Here is just a quick mockup of a couple screens in an UI concept I put together for a deviantART Android app. Again, this is just a UI concept and the app does not exist. I have a few more screens that I have made for this that aren't shown, but honestly, given that deviantART has flat out said NO, I won't be making it a priority. Maybe sometime I will post the full app set for most of the screens if there is a high enough interest in it or if deviantART asks me to.
**UPDATE**
I have updated this to show more screens of the UI concept. I know that not all features that one my want are shown, but I have illustrated the most prominent ones.

Darn, why is deviantart so against making an app? It would be great!

YES! If only...
Luckily for me, my phone can handle the full site on the go. I'm actually typing this from my phone! (I do happen to have the Dell Streak, though, which has a massive five-inch screen...) I hated the mobile interface too, before I learned how to turn it off, so I feel for you. I would love a dA app!

I know! An app would definitely make it easier for people. If their main goal is to make money, then... why not make two versions? One that is very limited with just the basics and ad supported for the general user? They'd still get ad revenue from that. And then one that people pay like $1.99 for in both the Markets and have the pro version only work for those with a premium membership here. Not only would they get sales from the app, but in theory they should see a jump in premium membership subscriptions. I'll say it again...don't see a downside to it.

Thank you for all the comments folks!!! I shared this UI concept in the forums and only got negative responses. According to them, most artists here aren't technically savvy and wouldn't give a shit about apps. I say they're WRONG!!

I say you're absolutely right.
I'd love to write an app around this design (and the Behance one as well), I just don't have the time or energy.

it look very cool , but I guess if deviantART website doesn't have an API (which they don't!) to create such app which will make developing such app very hard or even not possible :S

Well I'm sure that there is an API running behind the site, they just haven't released it publicly. IMHO, whomever is doing their business plan isn't doing very well. Overcharging for services and merchandise isn't a good plan....neither is loading up the pages with ads. Seriously, all they would have to do is release two versions...one that is ad supported and one that isn't that they charge a buck or two for. Either way its an unutilized revenue stream.

yes, it would be awesome....but sadly dA's priorities aren't in check. They need to keep up with the times or be left in the dust. I don't understand it. They charge so much for everything. The Premium membership costs too much and have you seen what they are charging for a dA backback? $90!!! I don't care how nice it is. This site is supposed to be directed towards students and artists...not exactly priced for their target audience huh...
anywho... maybe one day they'll wake up. Oh, and you'll notice I didn't put ads in the app design...hate em. If dA decides to make a mobile app, you can bet it will be filled with ads. If so, I prolly won't install it...I don't have a single app with an ad in it.

Totally agree man! I'm always stopping myself from accessing DA while on the go because of the limited mobile site. I tend to force myself to wait until I have access to a desktop/laptop to check DA. You know, one of the first apps I searched for when I first got my phone was a DA app
Smartphone users are growing at a great rate, more people want to access sites like DA from their phone. Sadly, as you said, if DA were to make an app, it would probably have ads, since they need more money...

simple solution... obviously they get money from ad views and ad clicks. so they just release two versions of the same app...a basic and a pro version...one ad supported and one that isn't that they charge a buck or two for.
I've actually started to use another site more than dA...Behance.net. They don't charge a thing for full features and they have no ads. No mobile site or app yet, but at least they have said that they are looking into it.

That solution would be ideal.
And, thanks for the site! I had never heard of it, but it seems like it can be an excellent resource. Might sign up if I start doing stuff other than simple OS customization.

Its a good portfolio site. I like the fact that it has a clean, uncluttered interface...unlike dA at the moment. Oh, and best of all they don't charge you for anything and they have no ads. I did a mobile site mockup for them too.

I know right!!! I kept it clean and simple so it wouldn't really be too difficult for a programmer. I even did my best to keep the familiar look that the website has.
